So first of all driving is the easiest part of what I am doing.
I started working for car hauling company. Jobs are always from west to east and vice versa. First two weeks I am trainee and then I will be paid as any other driver there, depends how efficient I can be pay depends On efficiency rather than experience but often efficiency depends on experience, but i think sharp thinker can do good from very first day. It is just about to organise addresses, check traffics. I talked to drivers and they go to Cali and back two times a month. If they are lucky each round trip is done in 10 days. So they work 20 days and never home during this period. However 10 days they are free and spending $7000-8000 that they were paid for this.
Those who own truck gross $12 000. Demand is very high and stable. Average price to send car from east coast to west is $1000 paid mostly in cash and your pay pretty much depends on the price of haul and then how fast you haul. Other than truck driving you do lot of other things, talking to customers (sometimes you get tips), making delivery plans which address goes first and which last. SAFETY FIRST, I have seen guys with 4 fingers. When your time is limited you have to work fast when mistakes happen.
The worst thing is securing cars on truck. Considering weight station limits on axles sometimes you have to park car that you are going to deliver first in front of trailer, so you will have to unload all other cars deliver that car and load cars back. Trailer frame gets very hot in son so its not easy job. Adjusting chain and straps are another difficulty.
So believe me driving is the easiest part of this job. 50% of trainees dont show up next day.
Today is my first day and I am doing hardest job. Picking up cars by smaller trailer in NJ, NY area. Dropped of 4 cars, picked up 3 and I started at 6 am and I drove trailer only on highways. I think I lost 5 pounds already. I only stopped once to eat since 6am
But my guy here promises this is the most horrible job to pick up cars in NY NJ area and driving coast to coast is like biking to compare.
Going to Cali tomorrow
my first day

Its an adventure buddy! Good luck on it. Those mobile parking lots make me nervous, I won't reference anything so you don't become weary. However you, my friend have tough skin to do it.
Dreamboat Thanks this. -
Congrats on a safe and hard worked first day!
Yeah those parking lots scare me you will not find me ever delivering a car.
Question: Do you deliver to dealers or only individuals? -
HorseShoe Thanks this.

Glad you finally got on the road, after starting 789 new threads...lol. Best of luck.
I did car hauling for a few years and it definitely gets easier after a while, but all I did was new cars. Even weight distribution was probably my biggest hurdle, lot of running on 1/4 tank..haLast edited: Aug 17, 2015

lots of character Thanks this. -
Fat guys can do anything minus finding their pecker. Let the lot lizard worry about that for ya.
Mudguppy and Warrior Pump Thank this. -
Height is a concern with auto transport. Watch out for draggers. You'll know what they are soon enough. Any damage/scratches are a big concern. Take your time load and unloading that's were things can get you. Enjoy the job. You'll never get to drive so many vehicles in your life. It's not for the weight challenged folks.
