With my brand new, shiny CDL-A with hazmat in hand, a classmate and I carpooled to Illinois to go on our first interview as prospective truck drivers. Here is a breakdown of the process.
Step one was a job overview. We went over pay and benefits, the different job types, a history of the company past and present and a small tour of the facility.
Step two was a small written test basically covering FMCSA rules and regs, general knowledge etc.
Step three was three one on one interviews. They all asked basically the same questions just worded differently. I'm used to interviewing with one person and that is it.
Step four was a road test. Due to the severe thunderstorm that was going on the pretrip I had to do went a little fast.I had to couple and uncouple a loaded trailer, go over a scale. Back up to a dock and driver through town. Nothing too complicated.
Step Five we went back to the gentleman from the beginning and he thanked us and said we would hear back from them in one to two weeks..
The whole process from start to finish was about six hours. Everyone was friendly and professional. The place has a good vibe, I hope to get hired.
I almost forgot before we got to this stage a background check had been run and a short phone interview was done. And I received a checking in the mail for time and fuel I suppose? I've never been paid to go on an interview before.I could get used to that.
Is this the normal hiring process for truck companies? I suppose being in charge of a loaded truck you would want to vet a driver thoroughly...

Well I got a call back today. (finally!) They want me to come in for what he termed a "post offer physical agility test" From what I have been told if I don't fall flat on my face or something I'll have a job.
