Josh most wont talk to you without the hazmat, at least the larger ones wont. Unfortunately the large LTL companies will run you very hard also. They wont push you over your hours, but you will be pushed right at the limit a lot. There is always one more piece of freight that needs delivered or picked up. Like was said before..you have to give it time to get a rhythm and learn the customer base and routing. First 3-6 months are going to be very hectic. When you get on with one of the larger companies you will run the extra board until you get a bid run union or not. Meaning you will run a different area almost every day. Some companies have you work the dock and drive. Some are union some not. Ask a lot of questions in the LTL forum before jumping in to a similar situation again. Most people are willing to give the good with the bad and help you in any way we can. Like I said before its a different animal peddling freight and its not for everybody but it can be one of the better jobs in the industry. Hang in there, do your research and expect to work 50-60 hrs a week. Its going to take you a while to learn the ways of peddling freight but stick with it. Theres a lot of people with 10-30 years at large LTL companies for a reason. Everyone that works at one has been through what your dealing with. I talk to drivers from every big freight company daily and we all have the same issues, just wear different shirts.

Thats familiar! I just got out of school in January and my first job out of the gate SEEMED to good to be true for a newb, home daily regional gig for a pallet company. Near new Volvo with under 100k on it!!! First day I worked 6am-10pm, second day 6am- 9pm then my 3rd day I was actually back at the plant at 4:50p and what do they do? Hand me a 4hr rd trip run to do! CYA!!! Did I mention I found out on my second day I was a 1099? Cute how that got snuck in! Im doing the same as you, waiting out my first year, working on getting HAZMAT and looking at the big picture.
