I don't mind throwing groceries, but not at 3am after I have been driving all day then checking in with the receiver every two hours to make sure I get a door. Delivering to many of the same places where DOT delivers, this would be my only complaint. I bump that dock at 3am and get a few hours sleep while the DOT foods guy is in there working his arse off. He probably makes a little more than me on the year but not sure that would be worth it. If you get home a couple of days a week it probably would be worth it.
But I can see having to log all that unloading time as off duty in order to get to the next load or get home. I can imagine unloading for 4 hours then driving for 8 without any sleep after having been up most of the night. And I have a dog. I can't abandon my dog and don't have anyone to look after it. Plus you all probably don't have high power inverters or Apu's. Even if I'm home 2 days a week I'm basically still living on the road if I'm out the other 5. I need to be able to have a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker to keep from getting sick from all the truck stop fare.
But this is a good post. Most of their drivers seem happy so obviously it must be a good place to work overall.
My first year as a Dot Foods driver

Never worked there, but I delivered at their Modesto location back in Dec. and the people there seemed top notch. Far from what I was expecting from a grocery warehouse.

My company used to deliver to their DC's a lot. I have always had good experiences there getting unloaded on time and treated well. I don't like their HQ location out in the middle of nowhere Illinois because it is one of the few places I don't get 4g coverage with Verizon. They do have free wifi in the driver's lounge.
It would be interesting to hear from the original poster to see if it's still working out for him. -

Thanks to everyone for complimenting my post. It's nice to know people will still read that much these days. The info I got from this forum helped me make the choice to go with Dot as a job, so the least I can do is pay it forward with a good review of my first year.
Things are still working out fine, but don't get me wrong... I'm not just giving an impression through rose colored glasses. There are certainly headaches to deal with and sometimes it seems like logic takes a vacation, but I've dealt with much worse in previous jobs, so, on the whole, the job is a really good one.
Something to add about the original post... I had the starting pay wrong. When I started it was 30 cpm, but the 3 cent raise last year means everyone starts out at 33 cpm in 2015. We're having another 2 cpm raise starting in March, so starting drivers will make 35 cpm. I've had a year of experience with them, so I've got another 4 cpm from six month raises, and I just became a trainer, so that's another 2 cpm. Watching my engine performance and idle time, I'm getting another 4 cpm, so I'm up to 45. Starting out at 30 cpm and ending up at 45 in a little over a year... that's pretty good.
And as some have mentioned, yes, the work is hard at times, but when I'm looking at earning 20-30 thousand more dollars this year than I did last year, I'll work hard every now and then. -
Just another update... The company is building another DC from scratch in the Southwest soon and rather than build another one from the ground uo in the Chicago area, they just bought an old Reinhart facility and will make changes to that to suit their needs. That's two new distribution centers on the radar, and the volume through the centers they already have is sky high and climbing.
Our DC has around 60 drivers right now. We're getting help from other drivers from DCs in other states to fill the gap until we reach the 100 drivers we need. If you're looking for a job, we're hiring. We'll take drivers in school who are getting their cdl and have a job waiting for them when they get the license. There is so much product to move, I made 1900 dollars this week and 1700 last week. Don't get me wrong... I love a good paycheck, but I would love to train some folks to get our numbers up so I could have a bit more time off!OftheBull, Dabbing&Trucking334, speedyk and 2 others Thank this. -
Where is the new southwest location going to be?
-
They haven't figured out an exact location, but I think somewhere in Northeast Arizona. Don't quote me on that though...
speedyk Thanks this. -
I just got an email on my people net last week... I'm out of the Williamsport Md DC.. Where adding 100,000 sq ft to our already existing building. DOT purchased 33 acres across the street. They're going to build a new garage, truck parking area, trailer lot and drivers lounge. We are going from about 450 millions lbs to 750 million lbs a year... We've been hiring like crazy... All things considered DOT by far is the best job I've ever had..
