    Hi All,
I'm a new driver in the midwest. 6 months with Schneider so far. I have a question about my career prospects going forward. I'm doing your normal dry van trucking currently. I'm out for about 2 weeks at a time and making an average wage per mile for a newbie.

I would like to make at least +50k a year, and my fiance wants me to be home every night (ideally). I know I have to put in about 2-3 years OTR trucking before other companies will look at me as a potential hire. There are so many different areas of trucking. I want to find out if there are specific types of trucking jobs out there that you all could recommend that would pay well and have me home all or most nights. (Not looking to be an owner/op at this point)
    -Thanks

Food Service...I did it for over 30 years with the same company (Golden State Foods). Delivering McDonald's restaurants. Its a hands on physically demanding job , but once you get some seniority you can bid to run 3 to 4 trips a week and be home every night. Starting out you may run a bit more and may have to take a layover trip , but you are in a motel room that is already set-up and paid for at the end of your day. Take your break and head in, usually after a layover the next day is a day off.

Pay is great , benefits/retirement packages are too. On average drivers made 65 to 68,000 a year..with some making alot more. When I retired in Nov. of 2011 I was running 3 days a week home every night and made a little over 72,000 a year...now granted I was the # 4 guy on the bid-board too.

Like I said it IS a very labor intensive type job....but IMO thats good. I'm 63 and can go do anything I need to to do...no health problems , lots of guys I know can't but its all in what YOU want.

    Good Luck.

    Maybe YOUR BOTH GEEZERS Giggles.

Pumpkin I would not just wait 2 -3 years before you start applying at places. Do your research like you are and start putting in applications when you got it figured out and when/if they say "no you have to have xxx amount of experience", check back 6 months later to let em know you are still interested. Granted a lot of local gigs want experience but if you put on a good face to begin with that might just get your foot in the door.

Get your tanker and hazmat and haul fuel .its local work it pays really good home every night and you can choose from day or night shift they like new drivers with no fuel transport exp so they can train you there way I did it for a yr and my highest check was $2100 gross for 12 hrs a day 7 days straight easy money..
