I haven't done any tanker work but I was thinking about hauling gas to local gas stations.... I didn't know how much nights away from home that would be.
There is certainly enough gas stations in any one area to keep busy just with local deliveries I would think.
Lotta responsibility so I would assume it pays good.

Most of it is home after your shift is over. I know the companies local to me run shifts of 12 hrs. Couple of friends do it and seem to love it . Pay is great too.

Your home every night unless you live like out in the middle of North Dakota and yes it is a tremendous amount of responsibility and concentration but for a young guy that shouldnt be a issue and the pay is relevant to the work you get pId by the trip and in a big city such as Charlotte NC where I worked we were busy 24/7 no breaks I just hauled booty it takes time to get all your fuel cards but once you do you can use them at any of the same terminals around the country even the training pays well.

Fuel cards? Is that a certification training for different fuels?

I haul fuel, and work 4 or 5 12 hour shifts a week. I am paid hourly.I work days, but there is night shifts as well (they pay better). Down sides to hauling fuel is it is COLD in the winter time (you have to be outside while unloading, no sitting in the truck). Also, depending on the company, you will be working weekends, holidays, etc for 3-5 years until you can get a week day shift. The upside to hauling fuel is it is stable, and an industry that will never go away (same with foodservice). I would start applying now... Don't wait 2-3 years. You never know if a company is in need of drivers. If they are hiring, put in an application. Also if you can, find a way to speak with the transportation supervisor/manager directly instead of dealing with HR...

Fuel cards are a magnetic card (similar to what you get at a hotel to open your door) that provides access to different loading facilities. You "card" in, and now the facility knows who you are. This allows you to enter the loading rack, load your truck with the gas/fuel you will be delivering, and then provide you with your BOL. You need to be trained/observed at each loading facility before you are given a loading card.

I'm in a fairly populated area of the midwest as I imagine you are.

What are the hourly pay rates for this work where you are? Say... when you start with the company, and then after a few years?

In Charlotte your paid by the drop like for 0-15 miles it was $30, and anything over 100 miles was $75 we did the local school bus district and circle k's local drops you can flip as little as a hr. It all depends on the shift your on and how many drops you had it wasnt uncommon to have 8-10 a shift.
