That's the first really positive thing I've heard about Werner. I saw so many bad posts about them plus I am always hearing about wrecks involving them on the news. They were my first choice but after all the negative input I steered clear of them. Perhaps you have had such a positive experience because you hired on as a veteran and not straight out of school.

If your riding 6th gear clear down to under 5mph I hope your downshifting before just mashing the throttle to the floor and lugging the motor way down.

Thanks for the story in progress, ShrugofAtlus. It's been a good read... informative and entertaining. I'm in a similar situation as to when you started your journey: I'm exploring the posibilities of trucking as a career choice, I dont have family or children that tie me down to any location, I would rather not make payments on a house that I might only get to stay in a few nights bi-monthly, the idea of driving all over the country and seeing whats out there is appealing, I hope to stay in good shape(loving the colapsable bike idea) but I understand that may not be entirely possible, and earning a bachelors degree online over the course of my journey is definetely something I would be keen on.
I do have a few questions for you or anyone who would like to comment-
1. Your bottom line; how much do you actually put into your savings account "at the end of the day"? are you on par to make 37k your first year(and is that net or gross)?
2. how much exercise do you get to sqeeze into a weekly period, and can you find time and locations to shower no less than 3x/week?
3. What areas/towns have you stoped at that you would consider not safe to go for a jog in, as in specific locations? I'm liking the parking at walmart idea 'cause their whole lot is under camera(at least the wal marts that ive seen) which would make me feel safer to a degree, have you ever been turned away from parking at a walmart?
4. Do you primarily prepare your own food or perhaps dine on a truck stop cusine? restaurants? "What is your diet?" I guess is the better question.
5. Lumping your own frieght to cut down on costs, I still haven't seen an answer to this and I also am curious.
6. If you could press a reset button and try it all over again, what would you have done differently?
7. Are there any additional resources, online or otherwise, you can provide to someone just starting a CDL training course?
Thanks again for all the info you and other posters have provided, Its all been very helpful. -
5. Lumping your own freight to cut down on costs, I still haven't seen an answer to this and I also am curious.
You can lump your own most of the time but before you hire on to a company that is a vital question-"Do you pay lumping charges?"
Every place I've talked to says yes, but that could just be recruiter "BravoSierra"
6. If you could press a reset button and try it all over again, what would you have done differently?
I went to school at Roadmaster Drivers School. It was very expensive ($6000+) and the quality of training left much to be desired. I understand that it was my bad luck to hit a rough spot in their program (5 different trainers in 4 weeks) that was not the fault of Roadmaster and they did give me an additional 2 weeks with one trainer. I think by that time I needed a reset. Because of weaknesses in shifting I sought out another school who would let me buy drive time with one of their instructors Sage Trucking School. I wish I had gone there first! In San Antonio they are associated with St. Philips College and from other posts I've seen it would appear to be a much better idea to go to a college or community college rather than the more expensive "head 'um up, move 'um out" private schools. Also, Sage has one-on-one driving instruction which made a world of difference for me. At Roadmaster it was 4 students + 1 instructor to a truck and the most time you could get behind the wheel was 1 hr.
This seemed to be fine for most everyone else so maybe it's just me. Think about what would be better for you.
7. Are there any additional resources, online or otherwise, you can provide to someone just starting a CDL training course?

I hope this will be of some use to you and anyone else. -
I can assure you that you won't make anything if you are expecting to be routed home every week. It takes a good two weeks to catch up after being home. When you request home time it limits your trips to a certain area that is near your home.. You could've potentially losing a good run. The first year is very difficult in the money department as you don't know what you are doing and driver managers take advantage of this. I wish you all the best friend. Don't give up. If you can get through the first year you will be fine. A good driver manager is imperative to your success. Try and get one with experience and a heart.

Shrug are you still out there? If so, how are you doing? Inquiring minds want to know!
