I'm thinking hazmat haulers are probably paying close to 54k a year.

First thing I would do is get out of NYS and especially the city. Taxes are a rip off and COL is too. It’s no good for a guy with a truck. Jersey would be a little better.

I’d rather haul cans off the piers in Jersey rather than that Amazon crap. As long as you have a good chassis it isn’t too bad and they got road work out to PA, OH, etc. It’s big business always plenty of work out of there.

If they don't have a truck payment they should be fine until some tickets drop off.

Been there, done that. That was my first long term trucking job. I absolutely hated it. All the waiting, the disrespect from the port yard jockies, the lines. Nope, hell no! I still have my TWIC card but that would be the very last resort.

Guess it's time for an update: I'm still with the same company, still pulling Amazon loads. Since the season started, we've actually been getting paid good. Or so we're told. The company recently changed the way they pay out. They basically pay out every week for the loads which they got paid for VS before we'd get paid for all the paperwork we've sent in. Not a fan of this new system since I've been working for a month now and only got about $5k in my pocket. We'll see what this Friday's statement looks like. Because the previous one was only for 2 loads and after fuel it came out to -$300.

Couple of weeks ago I got stuck for 4 days at a hotel waiting on a new clutch brake replacement. Turns out, my actual clutch itself is ####ed. Not gonna replace it soon, want to make some money first. Also now I've been off for 2 days. Yesterday had my air dryer changed. Lesson learned - don't buy cheap ### eBay parts. It lasted a few months and then started shooting like an air cannon. Went to a dealer got an authentic Bendix AD9. Today I'm at a different shop for an air leak.

Also confirmed with our logbook department that with the new log update (which I haven't installed yet) we won't be able to edit logs. But at least they enabled personal conveyance mode. We'll see how ELD affects my work.

I want to ask, is there companies which hire owner ops with limited flatbed experience or which train owners on the job?

System Transport in Spokane, WA. They run flatbed pretty much exclusively and they train. Worth a shot. They run nice equipment too.

TMC maybe? I would assume there has to be some flatbed outfits in PA also but can’t think of anybody off top of my head.

Gotcha on the port deal. I was thinking maybe one of the bigger outfits like Safeway, Sal-Son, Daybreak, or International Motorfreight would maybe lease on Owner-ops exclusively for drop/hook linehaul without actually having to go onto the piers, which I agree ain’t a good deal for a guy running his own truck. That’s hourly wage company driver stuff.

Not to mention the tolls around NYC are ridiculous! About $100 to cross the Verrazano Bridge out of Brooklyn. About the same to cross the Goeathals Bridge into Staten Island. And I95 NJ Turnpike. Even if the local companies paid well for the drops, the tolls would eat away half of that.

As far as flatbed. I'd still have to get the equipment, and either install a headache rack or some kind of heavy duty box on the chassis where my APU used to be.

Maybe I'll have better luck finding a company on these forums...

I know. I hauled cans In Jersey for two years working for a guy out of Cranford on an hourly day cab job. I went to all of them...Maher, APM, PNCT, Howland Hook and sometimes even the Croxton NS rail yard. Some days were better than others. The new Goethals bridge is nice but I didn't like having to go into NY if I could help it. I did quite a bit of loads out onto LI and even in the boroughs sometimes though. Also worked for Old Dominion in Brooklyn for a brief period but hated it. I'd take piers any day over that sh**

Try System Transport. They run all 48 and haul a lot of Genie lifts out of Seattle. I have even seen them on the Turnpike in Jersey so they go all over.
