Kusanagi good on you for assistance with weeding out truckers that think along the lines as your first mentor. They are just the ones that will be affecting the safety of others with poor judgement calls. Good luck on your future and get well soon!

You can wear shorts. You would be insane not to. I never did, however - it's a trade off. Some people were wearing pants and long sleeved shirts to keep the sun off them, others were wearing shorts and tshirts and using a lot of sunscreen. I don't feel direct heat too much, which is why I got heat exhaustion so badly. Just as long as the shorts and pants don't have a lot of holes in them or the clothes you change your oil in.

There's a Kmart in walking distance, and there's a Walmart about a mile or two from the hotel that you can walk to if you feel like it, but wait until night when it gets cooler. We made the journey 3 times and it sucked.

Powdered gatorade and trail mix. Also, don't listen to the few know-it-alls in every class. Everyone, including ours, had one or two people like this that already give off the supertrucker vibe.

    Good luck, and stay cool!

Awesome, thank you soo much for the heads up. I don't get burned really bad so I may do shorts and Tshirts and wear jeans after that if I get burned too bad. I switched dew for gatoraid to lose weight a while ago so I'm cool on that. I'm used to humidity and temps in the 90s being from il so I'm hoping the dry higher heat of Phoenix won't be so bad. I'm definitely looking forward to Cali and all I'm going to learn in Phoenix.

I'm from San Diego, and the heat wasn't TOO bad as long as you stay on top of your fluid and electrolyte intake. And WEAR SUNSCREEN! I cannot stress that enough! Coat yourself in it - if you don't you WILL be in for a world of hurt. My roommate, who had never had a burn in his life, ended up getting one for the first time. I was lucky and didn't burn once. One guy there got burned, molted, and got burned again on the nice new baby-pink flesh.

I definitely will use sunscreen. Kinda wanted to work on my tan but I'm gonna take your word for it. I love the San Diego area. I was at mcrd San Diego about 10 yrs ago and it was beautiful but when someone from socal tells me wear sunscreen I think it's smart to listen lol. Thanks again kusanagi and I hope your feeling better. Maybe after I get to Visalia we can get together to talk as your passing through.

Yes sunscreen is a must, AZ sun is a whole dif animal than most places.. I went thru the academy in May/June when it was just getting hot and I fried.

Just my 2c. here on the Powder Gatoraide.. Ive lived in AZ for lil over 20yrs now and I built homes here in the sun for 15+ of them.. The powder Gatoraide is ok, and I mean OK.. It's best to invest in Wally World bottles, or go hit the Jake Break and see if they have any in the store(next to the company store, forget its name).. You see the powder stuff tends not to desolve 100% and can/will have adverse effects on your kidneys. I used to mix 10gallons of that stuff daily for my construction coolers and ended up in the ER and got the low down from the Dr onhow he see's a few cases a year from this.. Now, not that it will happen, but just wanted to pass on a lil bit of info/exp yer way.. but DO drink tons of it !!
Drink a lot before you go out, and after, and obviously durring.. Yer not thirsty, go chug more... Last thing you want is to be sitting in the ER with a tube in yer arm loosing valuable range training and or a possible roll back.. !!

Sry, didnt mean to jump in thread..

Thanks hammer! I like the bottles a lil more anyway. All I ever see in walmart in powder is orange:pukeleft: You guys are awesome on here and I am starting to get addicted to this forum lol. As far as bottles, do they mind if you bring a couple jugs, do you have a locker for lunch and drinks, how is it set up and what do you get to take on the range with you?

The problem is with the Jake Brake is that the Gatorades are fairly expensive. If you decide to pack your own lunch, you can walk down to the Wal Mart and get them for a dollar a piece. Plus you only have half an hour lunch, which is just enough time to get to the Break and back from the range since it's on the complete opposite end of the yard.

    Nubis13 Thanks this.

There is a company store in the driver area, the store next to it, again forget the name.. They sell damaged products or refused items off loads.. Sry I didnt mean the actual Jake Break... If you can get to a Fry's Grocery store, summer time you can get 10 bottles of gatoraide for $10, and I think Power Aide is lil cheeper..

Lockers, no, but there is a small trailor that you can put your lunch containers, etc.. I used to put my motorcycle helmet and jacket, backpack..etc, in there, it's safe.. Bring ALL the drinkables you can out on the range, they have water coolers out there as well. they wont get on you for that..

    Good luck out there !
