Mentors used to get $.01 a mile for a year for every mile your student drove if they stayed with the company. Now I think the only benefit is you get paid for all miles a student drives on your truck+whatever you drive. That may be at a reduced rate too. My mentor is L/O and they actually cut his pay.

On fixing the headlight? Did you use your Road King card??? That ads extra points to your account!

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Very well written and quite interesting! You are not alone when you say you do not like Texas for I have heard that from others. Guess not one of the states I care to ever visit.

Friday i got to learn all about a part of trucking that I knew existed but had no experience with yet. I wasn't going to be driving today so I could finally get a much needed reset, so my mentor was preparing to pull out. While doing the pre-trip he discovered that the tractor's brake lights were not working. So he decided to drive it over to the shop to get some bulbs, immediately loosing the clutch. He knew the clutch had been going since before I had gotten in the truck but right then and there it decided it had enough.

We talked to the mechanics and had the truck pushed over behind the shop where we now sit. It sounds like I will be learning about truck breakdowns until the middle of next week. We were told the soonest they will get to the truck is Monday and that the clutch will be a two day job. Looks like getting that reset won't be a problem now.

As for the previous headlight repair, the Road King card was not forgotten :) Unfortunately, i don't think that the Swift mechanics our going to give us points or anything for these troubles. So, If anyone happens to be around the terminal in Columbus, OH I would be happy to meet you in person if you are interested.

One bad friday afternoon going south through D.C. could change all that as you begin to wonder if you will ever get to Richmond.
It will seem as if the entire population of the northeast is going that way.
But as time goes by, you will discover it is mostly a matter of timing when it comes to any major metro area.
Unfortunately, the 14 hour rule prevents you from taking a 2-4 hour nap to let rush hour die down.

The kind of training you are doing is what I expirienced. It can be wearing but the expirience is irreplaceable. Sounds like the mentor is doing a good job. It proves that it doesn't matter what the name on the door is but who is behind the wheel.:yes2557:
    Keep up the good work.

I din't take school in Memphis. You will be cohabitating whith God knows who. Don't take anything you don't want stolen.

If I have to stay at a hotel in the future I want to pay the extra $$$ to get it to myself. I had two #######es when I was in orientation in Memphis. One jerk walked into my nonsmoking room with his wife and two kids smoking and talking all kinds of crap. Real ingnorant psycho redneck. Nothing got stolen from me there. Just my brand new insulated coveralls at the terminal while waiting for a mentor.

Do you mean that it is better to continue through the rush hour because your "clock" is running or that the 2-4 hour nap won't change you calculation point? I've been reading some on the HOS. It's confusing so say the least, so could you 'splain mo'? Thanks!

Exactly. The clock is running, so unless you have time to squander, it is generally best to keep on trucking.
When the 14 hours is up, you have to break regardless of the ground you did or did not cover.
In the past, you could simply drive longer, regardless of the time spent napping, as long as you didn't exceed your allowable drive time, which wasn't contained within a 14 hour block.
