I really didn't have time to go into detail so I took a picture of my software report for the month. The number was a little low that I took home but I had a lot of startup expenses and also had a new seat installed. The seat alone was almost $1000. All in all not a bad month for me. I am happy with it and am looking forward to seeing what this month will bring.

What is the difference between truck fuel & yard fuel line items?
Also, did the the miles shown include your deadhead miles?
Not sure which software you're using, however, any spreadsheet that does not include labor costs, even draws taken by yourself, with additional associated labor costs, is just not complete.
Deduct your draws with se taxes from the "profit" line and that's closer to what your profit margin really was for the month. -
I use fogline software for my accounting. Yard fuel is fuel purchased at our yard. I input that charge differently then regular fuel because I don't know how much it cost until I am charged for it and they don't break down the charge to individual purchases so I have no way to tell what I was paying each time. It is for that reason I quit buying fuel at the yard. The miles indicated by the program are both deadhead and loaded. I haven't needed to take draws out from the company so that is why they are not in there. I have a credit card I use if needed and pay it off asap.

What is this, charity trucking?Jarhed1964 and Crazytrucker77 Thank this. -
So since I have a few minutes I will break down what the charges are in my software that may not be self explanatory.
Truck parts - Anything I purchase for the truck that is used to repair or upgrade the truck such as the new seat I bought.
IFTA - I only put what I am charged here. So if it is zero then I was not charged that month.
Truck equipment - Because I am a flatbeder this is anything I purchase for securement gear; straps, corner protectors, etc.
Truck office - Anything I purchase for keeping track of my cash flow and truck expenses such as accounting software, printer, etc.
Yard Fuel - Fuel I purchase at our yard. We are not given the charged amount at the time of purchase so this charge is taken out of our pay in one lump sum. That is why it is tracked differently then standard fuel purchases. -

Not to besmirch Fogline, however, you can create & tailor just as good of a spreadsheet on something like Google Sheets and it's free
I would encourage you to add in what normal wages (including benefits & matching s.s.) would of cost you if you had a driver in the truck running those 7,817 miles for the month of March.
That will give you a clearer picture of whether or not $1.94 per all miles revenue is profitable for the associated risks involved.
I can tell you from where I sit, you need to be looking at ways to get that rate up as a flatbed operation to at least $2.50 a mile revenue, or you'll be broke or operating your business, with all the headaches & associated risks, for no more than what the average flatbed driver makes in the end run.
Good luck and I wish you well. -
So if I'm understanding this right, you made 5k dinars after all truck expenses. Is that right? That's 60k a year on a full years work. Unless you have a major felony or terrible driving record you could get a company job paying more than that.
Another question. Adding your 2 fuel charges together i come up with over 40 cpm for fuel. I thought the main reason of having a newer truck was for the fuel economy? That's more than i spend on fuel for my 20 year old brick. Either you are paying way to much for fuel, or you are getting crap millage.
Edit to add:
the fuel could also be you running in high fuel cost states such add the i5 corridor. If so then ignore that comment. But you should look at what you are paying for fuel and then look at what you could be getting fuel in your own for. Nastc has a pretty good fuel card you can get. Look into it.
Toy also didn't state how much of the month you worked, or were available to work. If you took 2 weeks of then the income level is much more acceptable. But if you was working, or available to work for 25 days then you need to get it up. Either on the revenue side, or the expenses side.Last edited: Apr 9, 2018
