One thing I've come to learn about trucking is that you have to have an immensely high BS tolerance. The training period is an introduction to the industry. That will make or break a rookie. I had a trainer at Western Express that was an ex marine with a bit of a big ego. He didn't really hold back his words. I'm incredibly patient and he definitely tested my patience, but I'll give him this: he knew his stuff and I was able to learn from him. The BS you deal with from a trainer is just a small fraction of what you will deal with on the road from time to time. OP, I can tell you're a smart guy from reading your posts. Don't get too stressed out because you're not going to know everything once you leave your trainer's truck. You will be out here many years and you won't know everything.. it's always something to learn.. just remember that.. You don't have to rush to get out on your own either. If you're not ready and you think you need more training, I'm sure you're company will adhere to that. I saw a guy do that my rookie year. He was with his trainer for a month and didn't feel ready so he stayed another month. I wish I had done the same thing being a flatbed driver at the time. To re-emphasize: Don't stress yourself out because you won't learn everything in training. There's always something to learn.
My luck with trainer, so stress right now.

I have movers tell me all the time "I drove trucks for a dozenteen years, here's what you SHOULD do."
Makes me wonder what they did to their CDL to be stuck as a mover now.
You've got the right idea, never let the guy who is not behind the wheel call the shots. Doesn't matter if their title is "trainer", if you don't feel comfortable don't do it.
