tow, it wasn't my intention to argue with you or anyone, but just to provide some information. The point isn't to go line by line and try to prove which company is better or which one is better for drivers. Now we are likely to see the best of both worlds come to fruition over time.
I won't keep going back and forth, but I will answer this post with what I know. Heartland hasn't paid off of the practical mileage pay in the past. They do pay a higher than most rate per mile and keep the payroll simple. Not a lot of bonuses, just a safety bonus which is in addition to the high rate of pay. Heartland drivers make up to 52 cpm depending on their division, and the average of ALL Heartland drivers is 46 cpm. One of the higher W2's that they saw last year was $77k, and the average of all Heartland drivers was $57,000, with over half the drivers making more than that. Their philosophy has been that it is the overall paycheck at the end of the week and the end of the year that matters and not nickel and dime for this or that - just pay the highest rate per mile in the industry and in the end you will be compensated well for what you do. Heartland drivers do very well in pay. What I will say is that don't think for a second that GTI is just going to adopt the Heartland pay model. Not going to see any changes to pay structure unless it is a raise - that I can almost guarantee. The Gerdin's philosophy has always been to be at the top of the pay scale. Offering the best service to customers and charging a fair price is what allows the company to pay the best. Companies can arrange their pay structures in a hundred different ways, but in the end with regards to pay it just matters if you are making good money or not.
I already spoke to the APU question. Currently Heartland trucks don't have them, they have bunk heaters and inverters. They also run brand new equipment with mostly model 2013's and 2014's, and most of their trailers are band new. Their equipment is excellent. GTI is continuing forward with the same equipment specs they have been, with more GTI blue Freightliners coming. I spoke to this more in depth in my earlier post.
I do hope that you are successful, and that is really in your hands if you choose to be successful at GTI or somewhere else. I hope if you are a great driver that your driver manager will fight for you and your fellow drivers will fight for you and everyone else will fight for you, and I hope it works out very well for you. If you have made up your mind that you are not going to stick with it then by all means move on and wish the best for your fellow GTI friends.

I thank you for your time.. all one can do in this situation is wait and see..
I remember an old commercial that used to air frequently that said "you only get one chance to make a first impression" .
I am willing to wait and see how heartland proceeds from here.
What will be the first impression we receive?
So far all we have are words and the reputation of past performance to go on.
Who knows.. -
I am on a wait and see basis. I hope that things will be ok. That things won't change like they are out east. We will see.

Here's the dilly Heartland upper management that are telling me they are not, lol. 2600 people employed by GTI have no idea what the future will bring. Monday morning all was good. 14:00 pacific time, that changed. For 2600 people. Now I am not saying, and neither is Tow, Vic, or anybody else that you're the "evil corporation" who came in here just to tear things up and screw the GTI workforce. I know that and so does everyone else. A good deal is a good deal. The difference is for the GTI driver, the support behind that driver, the equipment that driver is in, and the routes that driver takes.
Understandably you want the highest possible revenue per unit, which I guess means quit running tolls. Well, route a truck from St Louis, MO to Harrisburg, PA. It costs around $80 to run that section of the PA Pike, not including whatever discounts from using ezpass. On the PA Pike there are places to stop and take a 10 or now the 30 minute break. Routing off I-70/76 to I-79 to I-68, you'll burn more fuel than you would pay in the toll. Not too mention almost 0 places for DOT breaks, plus more hours off the HOS because of the way the highways are designed plus coming into the 35 mph zones. How do you route around NYC tolls or NJ or NH or Maine? Chicago?? Also routing in the West is different than routing in the east. Say you're coming from Seattle to the twin cities? On the map, 90-MT 200 to 94 looks good right? Not in the winter when MT 200 is completely covered in ice.
Lastly, our planners here are out of this world. They get it. They can plan a truck and keep it rolling. Will this change into the way Heartland plans their drivers? And also, drivers in the Midwest and Southeast that are with GTI now, what will change for them seeing as Heartland is huge in those areas. Will those drivers still have the long haul opportunities to run west or will this be a regional situation where a lot of swapping will take place?
These are a few of the questions that GTI drivers have. Luckily, GTI is still ordering/recieving tractors with APU units and there are enough under 2-3 years old that will cycle through for a few years yet. You've got to remember what GTI drivers came here for. GTI. The company had been very good to us. I am not jumping ship nor advising anyone to do so, waiting to see what the outcome will be. But when I've talked to your recruiters in Carlisle not long before I came here, I didn't like the low miles they were telling me I would get, and thats where my anxiety comes from, plus knowing quite a few in the NE region.tow614 and truckinmike1984 Thank this. -
Good discussion. Thanks for your kindness and letting me weigh in.
tow614 Thanks this. -
Don't go away mad...
Kindness is not exactly what we do here...
Discuss, we do. Argue. Bicker. Piss and moan.
(to the extent we can get away with it without the ban hammer sending us off into digital obscurity)
And you have as much right here as anyone.
/Heartofatrucker, we don't mind hurtin' yer feelings... or anyone else's. The mods, however, have figured out how to herd cats. Just like Gordon and HTLD have learned to border collie truck drivers. We have dreams of freedoms--while retaining our pay checks and usernames...
//I know what you want your username to read, but I always read, 'heart of a fat trucker'. Dunno why. Just sorta comes out that way for me. Sorry.Last edited: Nov 17, 2013
