My New Job

    I've officially joined the ranks of Oil Field Workers.

    I recently took a job driving a Frac Sand Tanker for a local oilfield service company in support of the Barnett Shale natural gas fields here in North Texas.

    It's interesting work, and I'm working with some good folks...It's a bit different(product wise) than hauling cement in a dry bulk tanker, but it sure pays a lot better.

    The equipment is all within a year old and more is being purchased every month to keep up with growth and new work we're taking on every month.

    Our owner understands the need for expansion and isn't afraid to invest the dollars to make sure we have the tools to do our job. This IS truly like a breath of fresh air in todays market and economy.

    Actually, when I say I'm driving a truck... there's not much actual driving involved at all. Going to the well and when I'm empty, going to get another load is about all I do. 100 miles a night is about average. The rest of the time, I sit. Either staged at the well or at the yard waiting to be called in to the well.

    To make a long story short......it's boring most of the time. I take a lot of naps and read a lot of books. Going to have to get a laptop now so I can keep up with the forum everyday while I'm at work...to watch movies too!!!

    Glad to hear you are living the Life of Riley. :biggrin_25518:On those frac trucks do you just pull up and an operator runs the machinery, or do they train you to do that as well? See them all over Parker and Wise Counties. Pretty bad when a Texan doesn't know all about the oil field business.:biggrin_2552: Also, are you working 12 hr shifts? Have talked to some of these drivers and get all different answers. 12 on 12 off for 5 to 7 days. Others 8-10 hr 5-6 days.

    Are you being paid by the hour? I don't know anything about the oil business.

    Paid by the hour....yes...overtime after 40. Last week I hit the 40 hour mark at the end of day three...with three more days to go.

    5:30 PM to 5:30 AM...my choice...it's cooler at night in Texas summer.

    12 hour shifts...6 days on and 2 days off...that usually end up as 13 or 14 hour shifts due to shift changes at the well site and shuttle back to the yard. My outlook is...go ahead and pay me more money for the ride back to the yard!!!!!!!

    Big Duker...the only equipment I run is my bulk tanker...the sand guys that work with the Frac Company run all the other stuff. The job sites are all in Johnson County so far...15 miles or so from our yard. We do have to go to Ft Worth and Glen Rose for sand as well as out by you in Cresson on occasion.

    As far as knowing all about the "Oil Business"...I'm a rookie too. I just got a job driving a truck for an oil field service company. It's amazing how one skill can lead you in many different directions.

    Last week was an 82 hour week...actual work. Add in 8 hours for July 4th and it adds up to 48 hours regular time and 42 hours overtime.

    I was thinking of working for Schlumberger or Halliburton up here in WY. They have lots of trucks, but I don't know if their drivers just drive, or if they do other stuff. I was offered a spot at Schlumberger but they said I would be doing lots of heavy manual labor stuff, not sure if I could keep up with that, so I passed. They said I would drive out to the site, and then work out there on the equipment and pipes and all that good stuff.

    Thinking about getting a tankers license so I can deliver water to the oil fields out here...I've heard of some very good numbers for driver pay.
