First of all, Congragulations on the Class A license.

Secondly, 4 or 5 days sounds more like regional than OTR.

*edit, if you live in NYC I'd bet there's tons of local jobs--you're probably in a better situation than most drivers here to find out what's locally available. I can only speak for myself here, but driving in NYC freaks me out.

This is the New york State Job exchange. I checked it out first, to see what it was like. It should give you a very good place to start.

Living in the Bronx has one tiny problem. That's finding a place to park your truck and trailer for home time! I know, I ran a dedicated route into NYC once a week for 2 years and then did many years of NYC because of those wannabe's that "I don't do NYC!" Just more money in my pocket!

Go down to Hunts Point and also over to 149th street where Coke and Restaurant Depot are, and on down the street past them and watch the trucks and see who is out of NYC so you will be driving for someone close to home and all you'll have to do is hit MTA to get home! Also head over to Metropolitan Ave at Union Ave. in Williamsburg. There is a little park there with benches and you can sit there and see how many NYC trucks go by for you to check on or head down Meeker Ave East and look for that little fuel stop and watch the trucks in that area. There are a lot of companies all around there and on the west side of the BQE not to mention the yellow pages. But there are a few shops around Hunts Point that might know who's hiring.

Heck, I just night have to move to NYC if I loose my car from being unemployed and on disability! At lease it's always walking distance to a store and MTA is getting cheaper than owning a car! LOL. And I believe those smaller companies want experienced drivers anyway so when I get back on my feet what the heck!

Anyway good luck! Just remember you don't want to park your truck for a weekend just to find it stripped when you get back to it! I knew a guy that lived around Linded and Flatbush somewhere and he thought he had a great place to park (well, it really was) until he went to put his stuff back in the truck and the whole dash, steering wheel, seats, mattress, bunk heater and wall panel was missing! And he was an L/P driver! What an expensive way to live! AND he could see the truck from his flat! Go figure! Live close to work and the parking is taken care of. Just don't think that the Vince Lambardi Rest service plaza is a good place to park. The thieves have figured that out and watch the drivers pull in and get in the car with momma or a friend leave! Doesn't take long to take the truck or clean it out! Plus they are taking up parking for those who need it!

I can't believe the "mafia" let that Restaurant Depot" go! Are you sure? It's the first place on the left after you cross over the rail yard. There is a tanker place I think on down the road from there some where as they passed me all the time when I'm sitting there to unload.

Don' let them scare you! The Point cleaned up their act a few years ago! Get in there and pay your $25 to get in and you have no problems! Go in there the night before at the meat market and jump on the bus and go home! Paid secured overnight parking! LOL I also parked over on 149th across from Coke but I always tried to park in the parking lot against the building across from the docks of Rest Depot. No problems with lizards knocking on the doors as that wasn't a good place for them to work. Heck, they don't even knock on the doors if you're parked on the streets around the Point any more because you could be a cop!

I used to get to that Rest Depot the day before delivery as when I had that store they were the first del of the day and they didn't open til 7:30 anyway! I would walk down 149th across the Bruckner to the subway and ride it over to Williamsburg to see some "friends" and head back early the next morning. Williamsburg has cleaned it's act up too and it's more the "younger hip crowd" and there are a ton of great restaurants and bars in the area! I also did a lot of the lower east side of Manhattan and Little Italy as, believe it or not the food there and in Williamsburg is cheaper than at the truck stops! Plus the "shows" are a lot better too! I love the sidewalk or front windows while eating and watching the ladies walk by! I might be getting old but my eyes still work like a charm!

Oh check out the Greenpoint area for companies. Always check along the inter waterways as there are a lot of chemical and fuel needing tankers and other types of hauling! NYC has more jobs than you can believe. Just be wary of the union types that get a little "headdy" if you know what I mean. Yes you will more than likely have to pay for that union job but in NYC it's union or starve! Sometimes even on the OTR jobs. But heck if you can get a local and have no problem handling it go for it. Just watch those container companies that d want to pay you mileage pay and not hourly! It's a "B" driving all around a port looking for container because some YoYo didn't write the location down!

Question, What is rent going for now on a 3 bedroom apartment? I have 2 older sons and the wife, furniture for 3 bedrooms and 2 living rooms and a dinning room! LOL We'd really need 3 bedrooms and the bigger kitchen and living room.

    Good luck

Ok what they closed down was the fruit depot that`s the one when your comming from 149th st. comming from lincoln hospital u cross the grand concourse then when you get to the bottom of the bruckner you make a right ...that used to be the fruit market...so maybe i mad a mistake about which place closed down...sorry bro...lol...Now for apartments here im paying 1400 for a large two bedroom i mean large over by the parckchester area....about 5 to 10 minutes away from the point...so for a large 3 bedroom you might be looking at 1600...but let me just say that you know here in new york if the wife aint working she will get food stamps and all types of help from the government ...don`t mean to offend you in anyway...but any government help does come in handy...shoe they take all them taxes a way from us we need to get it back some other way...lol...so rollover i think you should roll ur behind back to the city it has changed so much...a lot more safer no one selling drugs in the street anymore...juliani really cleaned this place up...you can walk down the streets of the bronx like if you was walking down the streets of manhattan...no b/s...
