Just crossed 1 year driving just a couple days ago. Gonna make a round up of the stuff that's happened in the last year.

    Preventable accidents: 1 Damage: $100
Info: Scraped another trucks side mirror. (nothing on driving record) (non dac)

    Non-Preventable accidents: 1 Damage: $600
Info: Side swiped hit and run in Chicago by a car. That was the day I found out my dashcam wasn't recording.

"If nobody saw it did it really happen accidents": 2 Approx damage: Unknown.

Info: Bumped another trailer in my first month of driving while backing in a dark yard. Funny since it was one of our company trailers.
#2 Was very tired one day and was lost in a steel mill. Made a left turn around a guard shack, saw my wheels were gonna clear but didn't notice the guard shack roof sticks out about 3 feet. Hit the corner of the roof of the guard shack, scraped it 3-4 feet. Guard looked at me, I looked at him and he just waved me through. The roof corner was already destroyed from what appeared to be another idiot like me who hit if before. Never heard anything from the company.

All these things happened in my first 6 months of driving.

    Total miles (Roughly): 80,000
Net income after taxes: $45,000 CDN.
    Total states operated in: 24
    Close calls: 5
    Highest speed reached: 82MPH
    Carriers worked for: 2

    Lessons learned:
-Take directions given from your QC with a big ### grain of salt.
-Proper trip planning is key to stress free driving.
-Watch that tail swing in U-Turns seriously.
-If you don't feel comfortable driving in bad weather, don't drive.
    -Dont drive tired
-That route given by your company is not always the fastest even if it's less miles.
-Driver managers are not your friends.
-Dont get too reliant on GPS routing
    - Watch for overhead obstructions (Power lines, Tree branches, Corner roofs)

Just curious to know how y'all did in your first year as a new driver? What are some things you learned when you were in your first year of driving?

Information from this site helps greatly. Could of been much worse off. I still consider myself a new driver for atleast another year.

    Try this, too
Always practice backing in a company yard full of company trailers.

    Canadianhauler21 Thanks this.

In my book. Drivers stop being rookies when they drive for more than a month. Grats on one year of driving.

I have been driving for almost 5 years and still consider myself to be a rookie. Not sure if I'll ever make it past rookie status to be honest.

I've got a tad over seven years. The way I see it EVERY day presents an opportunity to prove I'm a rookie.

Heck, I have seen retired drivers I would put a two day rookie against.
The one thing about trucking you can always count on, is every day will be at least some different from the previous one.

You know how when you talk to a used car dealer, and he tells you that ‘he’s working for you and he’s going to get you the Best Deal’, and you get that uneasy feeling that you’re about to get porked?

Well driver managers, dispatchers, travel agents, driver leaders, fleet managers, whatever they call them at your company, all go by the same playbook. The SAME playbook. Don’t believe me? Want an interesting thread?

Ask any experienced driver to name the 5 most common lies/garbage/ propaganda...etc, that they have been told by a dispatcher.

Try not to hit ANYTHING this year.
    Or, let anything hit you.
    Vigilance.
When you start to develop that sixth sense that some wickedly stupid shyte is about to go down... you're on your way.

After 31 years, I know they're gonna do something stupid before they even contemplate it.
After 31 years, I still get out and look, too.
    Multiple times if need be.
I still, when I'm entering a congested area or city, make a concious note that I need to be on my "A game" and that this could be the time that someone involves me in their stupidity.
    Don't be nonchalant.
    That's when you'll get bitten.

Nathanos, Canadianhauler21 and Lepton1 Thank this.
