I enjoy the freedom of no payments period. Focused on housing costs now. Gonna downsize next few years. Don’t really like Rigid Plans. Too much chance for disappointment. I’d rather play it by ear and keep options open.Nice for a change. Always hear Retirees saying how much more they enjoy working as an option instead of necessity. That idea really apeals to me. I’m wore out!!!!

I constantly add to a shop fund. A dollar here, 10 or 100.

When the vehicle kicks the bucket and needs a Lazarus Machanic and Company to kick it back to life... that Shop fund comes in handy. I drove my Tahoe about 60 miles this year, Spending 1450 so far this year paid the first week of next month on the dot. Gasoline is immaterial, running on a fill from 4 years ago. With a dallop here and there.

    Call it $24.10 a mile.

There is a additional 1200 dollars in work being set up in appointment, final cost this year 48.20 a mile give or take.

I have a buddy who took his social security at 66 & half years old a few years back. He has a place on 10 acres with a nice shop. He's mechanically inclined and buys and sells cars & pick-ups now. All cashola deals, so, he probably makes more every month now than he ever did as a truck driver.

It did give me something to think about. Since I got my MC I've run 160K miles, with maintenance of .20 c per mile. But I am still before overhaul - already over 1 million miles and during this time on two occasions I was down for a week and the last time it was very costly and lasted three weeks before I could get back to work. The worst period was right after I bought it (over 500K miles) and the maintenance was not much less than it is now but if I were to add payments at the time then it would have been sure more than 0.285cpm (also the fact that my interest rate was 15%).
I am kind of curious, if there could be a deal made with a sales broker that during any warranty work they could provide a replacement truck or as it was in Scooter's case, compensate at least partially for the missed revenue.

Too be honest, I think I lucked out on the revenue compensation from Volvo. I wrote a very detailed and professional letter to Volvo operations and I was honestly sort of surprised when they responded.

As to your comment about obtaining a loaner truck from the dealership if something goes wrong with the truck under warranty, that is very unlikely for a one man dog & pony show. The guy I used to work for had that kind of deal worked out with the leasing department of the dealership he leased trucks from, however, he leased anywhere from 10 to 50 trucks at a time on a rotating basis. In addition, that deal was on trucks leased through their full maintenance lease program.

When I went out on my own three years ago, I talked with the leasing manager for my region (who I had gotten to know) and asked if I could obtain a full maintenance lease deal like the company owner I worked for had and he said the big shots weren't interested in working with small operators like myself.

Such is life & business sometimes...

Perhaps setting up an account with a company like Penske would work in the event you're ever in a situation where you're going to be without your truck for awhile.
