I've been out here for about 2 weeks now and noticed the main reason I have to do 4-5 pull ups just to get it in, is because I make it harder on my self by have a jacked up setup. My best backs are of course a straight back even though sometimes I'm still at a slight angle .but a 45 or 90 are my worse. To be honest I don't really know when to swing out and swing back to the left, I just randomly guess when to turn the wheel. I made up something I call the 6 o clock rule...that's not to go to any truckstop to park after 6, I don't wanna hold up the many truckers pulling In as I do 3 Pull ups just to correct my setup.

Next time your at your terminal, ask a senior driver for a little advice on how to set up. That or maybe go out to the yard for a little practice. This is what I did when I first started driving. Take your time and don't get frustrated or flustered.

You'll get it... these things take time.

Don't worry about the 4-5 pull ups. Do whatever you have to do to prevent damaging equipment.

I'm definitely no expert at pushing a trailer backwards but I have learned that you've gotta know where your tandems are and where they're headed. The ###### trailer just sits on top of 'em and goes along for the ride.
If you're in close quarters, you gotta watch your nose too!

I take the path of least resistance most of the time at truck stops. If there's a prime spot up close to everything but there's also 20 out in the boonies....I'm going to the boonies! There's just no sense, at least to my way of thinking, in taking even a minimal risk when there's opportunity for virtually zero risk.

When you're at a shipper or a receiver, you generally don't have options. You put it where they tell you to put it. You'll get enough practice backing in those situations. Just keep your risk ratio down by lowering you odds when you can.:biggrin_25514:

I agree, also remember your pivot point is the trailer left rear outer tire. Place that where you want to pivot.

Use the "S" pattern. If you are not sure of how to do it, watch others and ask.

I am no expert my any means. 2 tidbits that might help. Know exactly what you want to happen and envision it before you start. Also, try to put the back of the trailer at the whole. The most simple rule of backing is, the trailer doors have to go in first.

My only advice would be PATIENCE. It's hard to explain setting up because everybody has their own way that works for them. Just take your time, don't worry about holding drivers up, and if you get in a jam just pull out and make another attempt. In time you'll learn what works for you.

If you are OTR, some weekend when your at T/S waiting for Monday delivery, Sunday morning is a good time to practice.
