    Hey all,

I have read several bipolar related threads on here but wanted to give my specific situation to see the responses. I was recently diagnosed as mixed bipolar and put on a medication called saphris. This is, from what I can gather, an anti-psychotic med, but I do not deal with psychosis, just suicidal tendencies when not medicated.

The difference between me and other bipolar threads is that I am specifically looking for a local or dedicated run, not OTR. I am hoping for a dedicated run where I can be home every night, as I cannot work on Saturdays due to my religion. Saphris says that it makes you drowsy, but I take it night and if I am home every night, that would not be a problem. Besides that, I doesn't really make me all that drowsy.

There is a school here in the Phoenix area that is not affiliated with an OTR company, but just trains you to test for the CDL. It costs about 1500 and I think I might be able to pay cash for it. But my question for the experienced is: do you think with my medical problems and meds it would be worth it? In other words, can I expect to be turned down repeatedly for jobs because of the meds or the condition? Once again, this is for a LOCAL run, not OTR. Would I be wasting my 1500 getting a CDL just to be turned down for every local job? This may be a judgement call on your part, and you may be guessing as to the preferences of potential employers but I'm just trying to get a sense from experienced drivers or office workers as to whether or not I can expect to find employment.

    Thanks in advance

Per DOT you will need to show 6-12 month's of stable, continuous use with no relapse's or side affects in order to be certified for a DOT physical and then it will be an employer's choice. I will say with out any experience already and not even a cdl yet it will be an uphill battle. I'd ask recruiter's first and then follow up with local employer's before i spent the money not knowing for sure. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

You want to get into the business and you are wanting to score one of the more desirable positions in the business with being home everyday and no weekends.

I'm not in the trucking business yet, but I would pose the following question to you:

Why would a company who was offering a such a desirable position choose to go with someone who has no experience?

I'm not knowledgeable enough about the industry to tell you that you won't find such a position, but looking at it from a basic opportunity/cost perspective the likelihood of a return on your $1500 seems pretty slim.

Most companies don't want that responsibility, a driver possibly hurting someone because he is drowsey while driving. And the religious thing won't fare well either. But, you could get lucky.

  9. You might actually have better luck working in the oilfield hauling water or sand and be home every night after a 12 to 14 hour shift. Depends on where you live, AR, TX, LA, OK CO, PA, MN, ND, WY, NY, OH, SD are all states looking for oilfield equipment drivers. As long as you can follow the rules on the pad and don't piss the company man off....you should have no problem at all.

Save yourself a lot of pain, ulcers and heart ache. Don't even think about trucking with your condition. Just my opinion.
