That pic of the lake level, it's actually the results of the dought, the western states have been in for many years.
Add to the fact that So. Cal is 'stealing' the water. Water ment for Las Vegas.

I wonder when the get the new bridge that bypasses the dam, built, if the road will open back up to trucks. US93 currently closed to trucks and busses, due to the bottle neck of traffic over the dam.

About 10 years ago, while riding along with a cousin in his truck, we had to to goto Vegas, and went over the dam. That was pretty amazing

As lv gn said it will be open to trucks, however when I was there 3 years ago they said that there will be a HUGE cement wall that will block the view of the dam. Keeps people from slowing to see and other post 9/11 worries.

They sure have come quite a ways on the construction. When I was there they were doing the blasting of the hills. Thanks for a great pic that shows an update.

That's not why it's closed to trucks. Shortly after 9/11 is when they decided to kick trucks off the route. They were afraid a truck might carry some explosives over the bridge, and blow it to smitherines. Can you imagine what a catastrophe that would be downstream, jeeeezzzz

Going over the dam in lv gn's pickup gave me even more respect for anyone that crossed that thing in a big truck with a 53 footer (or even a 48 footer for that matter). I made it a point to look at the rocks right by the road on that tight curve coming northbound into Nevada. I didn't see a single scuff mark from trailers, which I thought would still be visible even though the road's been closed to truck traffic for over 7 1/2 years now.

If I said it once, I said it a dozen times while we were there, I'm kinda glad I've never had to cross that in a big truck.

From what I understand, they cleared out some of that old rock facing, which is probably why you didn't see any scratches on it. I know there used to be a bunch there, lol.

I can't remember if they did it prior to 9/11 or after.

back when i was 8 years old, i went on on a summer vacation with family friends, and i remeber stopping at the dam, and taking a guided tour down to the power house WAY down there at the bottom.
Does anyone know if they still offer those tours since 9/11?
One of the highlights, you actulaly got to walk/ or stand in the huge diversion pipes, they used during contruction, that the river flowed thru. Can't remeber the diaminsions but it was HUGE.

Also i know that the public also was allowed at one time to go on a self guided tour of the #### at Lake Powell, there in Page,Az on US89.
Also you could take the elevator down to the bottom.
