First, I'm not a Super Trucker by any stretch of the imagination. LOL

I have had this happen 2 times in my career, once with a Detroit and once with a Cummins. Both times I was able to get over on the shoulder quickly, once I was getting on the Interstate on ramp doing about 30 mph. You turn the key off and she keeps running, the RPM's will start to climb slowly and you don't have long at all. Both times I was able to clutch it, get it in a High side gear and ease off on the clutch and choke the engine off. (Edit to add, Dot Not Pop off the clutch) If you don't get it shut off most times it will run wide open till she blows.

Exactly. If I were there from the start I would get it shut down. Been there once, it was a Lugger diesel engine on a commercial fishing boat I worked on. We were getting it fired up in dry dock before launching her for the season opener, the #### engine would not shut down after it lit up. Between two of us taking turns on the fuel cutoff lever at the back of the pump, we got it shut down. In the future if ever I encounter another runaway diesel, it will be a hammer or cutters to the fuel supply line. An engine will not run without fuel and it is far easier to cut the fuel supply than the air supply, a knife, wire cutters, hammer, vise grips/pliers taken to the fuel line and she is done.

So Just bog it (choke it) out...wow thanks. I did NOT know that, I guess ive been lucky through out my career, ive had the turbo blow 3X on the Volvo running the D12(company) motor, never on my 377 Pete running a 3406B(mine) Thats wild watching that motor self destruct like too.....wow

Probably a few old timers left that remember the old silver 92's. Pretty good motor for its time but was famous for the runaway. It would happen in high gear going down the highway. Choking it out was the only way to stop it otherwise it's a runaway freight train.

The problem is that the turbo blowing it's oil into the engine, after a seal failure. I'm not sure where regular fuel comes into a runnway disel.

That would depend on the reason for the runaway. A turbo/seal failure is one possibility.

Got my turbo replaced. Test drove it today, pulls much better than before. I got a used one off a signature 600. 1500 installed out the door.
