This is how I have to check the brakes in Indiana....
    1. The inspector will say "begin test with air pressure at or below 90 psi".
i have to explain this: " with the engine running, let the air pressure build and check that the air compressor governor cuts out between 100-140 psi. May I assist?" This is to rev up the engine to around 1300 RPM's to speed up the recovery of air pressure. Once you hear the "kick out, by the PSSST sound, that check is complete.
    2. Then I am supposed to say this: "for safety reasons SAGE wants me to put the truck in first gear. Then I turn engine off, turn key to on position so gauges work and release brakes ( push in both valves), then fully apply the foot brake; hold to see if the air pressure drops. No more than 3 psi drop in one minute for a single vehicle, or no more than4 psi drop for a combination unit, with air brake equipped trailer. Will you time me please?"
    3. " Fan air pressure by pumping the foot brake to approximately 60 psi and check that the low air pressure warning alarm and light activates."
    4. "Continue to fan off the air pressure to approximately 20 to 45 psi. Look and listen for BOTH valves to pop out."

Once that is done, " that completes my 4 point brake check."

I must state what I am doing BEFORE I perform these checks... Hope that helps, but remember your test may be completely different.

It most likely doesn't. My school had us doing our pre-trip saying (blank) not bent, cracked or broken. (blank) not chipped cracked or broken, (blank) not dry rotted, cracked or frayed) throughout the whole pre-trip. The DMV guy stopped me about 5 min in and told me cut that crap out. After the test was over and I passed I asked if all that was really needed and he said not at all. As long as we knew what we were looking at and what we were checking for it was fine. He said instructors didn't like working the office I took mine at because everybody from my school did that and made the pre-trip much longer than it had to be. Most likely the same thing.

This is the way my instructor told me to tell the dmv word for word

Needs some work in my opinion

First of all the examine will probably instruct you on when they would prefer you to conduct the in cab portion of the Pre-trip inspection and the in cab air brake inspection for the air brake endorsement.

"My wheels are chocked, this is my air brake test.

OK so far, I would suggest asking the examiner if it would be alright to get outside the truck to place the chocks (unless of course the chocks are placed before the pre-trip starts)

First, I'm going to push in my tractor protection valves, and let the air stabilize, I should not lose more than 3 PSI in one minute.

Back up a little bit, You chocked the wheels.. but you really should check and see if you have reached the cut out pressure, and your air tanks are full before doing anything else. When these have been done.. you should turn off the engine and turn the key back ON as the lights and buzzer (alarms) will not sound if the key is off... I would then RELEASE the brakes and let the needles settle (hopefully you dont have leaks).. after this, the wheels are chocked, the engine is off, the key is on and the brakes are released, you are ready to start testing the brakes.

Next, I'm going to step on the brake, I should not lose more than 4 PSI in one minute

Tip: have a way to time this! Push and HOLD the brakes for the full minute and explain what you are doing.. sometimes the examiner will tell you "its been a minute" and you can move to the next step.

Next, I'm going to turn the key on, (See notes) my light and or buzzer should come on between 60-70 PSI

AFTER the "minute" of holding the brakes (that tested for leaks by the way) you need to "fan" the brakes by pressing and releasing the brake pedal FIRMLY or purposefully.. until you get to the 60 PSI

Next I'm going to turn the key off, and fan my brake, my tractor protection valves should pop out between 20-40 PSI

Maybe its the way I trained maybe its something they do wherever you are, but once the key goes on during the first step, you should LEAVE it on until the alarms come on.. the examiner is looking for this and IMHO all of this adding another step to an already confusing procedure is a recipe for disaster.

Next, I'm going to start the engine, my air tanks should fill up to normal operating range of 105-115 in 3-3.5 minutes"

Then you look the tester in the eye and say "this concludes my air brake test"

The test really is not done as you have to test the parking brakes and then the foundation brakes .. unless they do not do that there.. but dont see why they wouldnt..

"The most important part is to look deeply into the tester eyes. With a passion"

I'm on the floor and my sides are killing me

I was kinda thinking something else along those lines ;-)

I was told by my instructor that the dmv tester is there with the sole purpose of failing you, and not to give them reason to

Texas doesn't make you do a pre trip inspection is what I'm told

    I didn't have to do a pre-trip in Texas.

How is that? Seems that shouldn't even be an option. Maybe so people won't check stuff and more tickets can be issued?

You're instructor is full of ####.. for the most part, examiners are ambivalent and or lean toward getting the people through the tests using hints.. but they cannot instruct nor make up for crappy instructors.. sounds like you have a crappy instructor.

I've sent hundreds of students off to the test. We teach them to determine if the truck is safe to drive, we also get them ready for what the state people want to hear. We adjust it every time there is feed back. It just makes it go smoother. Besides, different states and even different locations within a state have different people with different quirks.

    FozzyNOK Thanks this.
