so my wife's cousin is driving for a milk hauler doing similar work to myself. absolutely ridiculous what is going on over there. they are running him 17 hours per day, driving 500 miles per day but also home everyday. he is also loading milk and going to the plant. the company has him cooking his logbook (he is driving further then the 150 mile radius that i drive, he on a log). apparently the company has him using a paper log, and the owner the company applied for and got and EDL extension so they are not on ELDs yet. it seems to me that some companies are abusing whatever extension they can get in order to continue to violate H.O.S.
i am in no way complaining about walton milk hauling, i have actually never seen evidence that my boss expects us to violate any H.O.S. and everything i have seen so far points to my company being in compliance. in fact this makes me realize that i actually have it pretty good, it has its quirks but everything has always been legal (from what i have seen).
what my wife's cousin is doing is insane. what the consequences if a driver gets caught violating H.O.S.? he is also only making $620 take home pay (working 5 days, 17 hours per day that's 85 hours per week). i would run not walk from this company, in fact its a slippery slope over there from what he has told me, allot of guys have been leaving lately. pathetic pay and running illegal? i would run away from that. he is making $11 per hour he tells me, im probably in the $17-$19 per hour range, could always be better, but its much better then what pathetic pay he is getting.
i know the owner of the company he works for, i used to receive his milk. i cant believe he operates this way, only a matter of time before he gets shut down. my job isnt perfect but its not that bad either.
my wife's cousin driving for a different milk hauler, red flags

So
The question is "what happens if you get caught violating hos" ?
They park you for a 10 hour break or maybe 34. For starters. A red flag goes in the computer. If an audit is performed and finds an elaborate cover up to continually violate hos, the carrier authority is de-activated. If it's really bad they will email everyone on overdrive email list stating how this carrier is a "horrendous danger to public safety". I guess it's supposed to be shock and awe to get people to click it and therefore see ads.
And everyone gets a bunch of fines. Fines large enough you will wish you hadn't done what you done.
All that being said if they can get away with it safely then I don't really care. Lots of us did it for a long time. Nothing forces anyone to work for any reason so they can quit and work elsewhere. -
i agree with that, if you agree to continue to work there its your fault. i wouldn't work for a company that runs down right illegal. especially for such little money. there are other jobs out there.

Lol you couldn’t help but post about other drivers biz again.. So you are back to being a gossipy ##### ?
Grubby, mud23609, austinmike and 13 others Thank this. -
I'd find another job first, then document and video everything I could about the owner and report him after I quit. No excuse for running an operation like that. The guy should be shut down.

I too suggest that he go to another milk hauler. He enjoys what he is doing, aside from the poor treatment and pay. I have allot of respect for my cousin in law, he is a great guy; I tried to get him hired on with Walton but he lives too far from Alexander for my boss to want to hire him, he would have an hour commute to work.
I feel bad that he is having to put up with so much. Running him illegal, 85 hours per week and such little money. People here have said that I dont make much, frankly it's livable and I'm getting caught up with money... And I have never been asked to work more then a clock. someday I might too leave milk hauling but for now I'm not violating any laws, making a living wage, and pulling smooth bore tankers, and home with my young children. I think Tankers is good experience.
