I don't usually wear a hardhat. Yes, I know what my company's policy is, but bad habits are hard to break. Thankfully my shipper required them.
I was strapping my load, thought my winch bar was in the hole all the way, and gave it all I had...
It was pouring rain and I was soaked, the ground was slick with oil, and I was rushing. Everything added up just right and my winch bar owned me today.
...The bar twisted, I slipped and on my way down the winch flung my bar out and it smashed me in the side of the head. I got knocked silly for a few seconds, but I didn't get hurt.
If it hadn't been for my hardhat, I'd probably still be on the ground unconscious. I was in the back of the plant in a lot that was separated by a row of shrubs and trees. The only person I saw was the fork lift driver and only when he came to load me. I'd have been there for awhile.
I carry one of the big, heavy winch bars with the box on the end that can be also be used to snap binders. The box is what hit me.
I am now a believer. When that bar comes out, so will my hardhat.
My winch bar made a believer out of me.

I have the same kind of bar. When I was in kansas city one time at a J I seen a panhandler approach me. I usually shrug them off, but he had a bar like I had not seen before. It had a paten pending waiting on it as the label said. Good looking bar and he said after the patent comes out he could not sale them anymore. I asked him how much and he said 10 bucks. It has a hook that bites. Sometimes our winches are bent and you can't get the type bar that you are talking about thru both holes. This bar only needs 1 hole to bite. I have slipped several times with the other bar when it would not go all the way thru the 2nd hole.
I don't use this bar a lot, but it grips really well and you can get better angles of a bite with it. It is a little akward getting the feel of it tho compared to the other type bar. I think all of us have had close calls with winches and bars. I would not recommend getting your finger in the latch either.....Most guys name those latches some awful names....

It's a great bar. My company issues little crappy ones, but for attitude adjustment purposes I decided to upgrade.

Walk soft and carry a big winch bar. Plus don't forget the brain bucket! (hard hat) -
The worst I have ever done with a winch bar is drop it on my toe... that was quite enough thank you! I always wear a hard hat and steel toes when I work with them.

I had one hit me in the chin once. Threw my over weight butt ### over tea kettle. I was laying on the ground moving my chin around to see if I had a broken jaw. Whew I got lucky, just 4 stitches was the worst damage.

Had a friend who was flatbedding in Watkins Shepard. While tarping a load had a bungee break and took the hook in the eye. Last I heard he lost his sight in that eye and would need the monocular exemption on his medical. So, safety eye protection while using bungees, I believe they even have that stamped on them...
Wench bars: get one with the knob on the end or ridges. They actually have square hole wench boxes with a square end bar. Less chance of slippage, but when you work with company equipment, you take what you can get and do the best you can.
