Is it true that trucking companies have installed camera's in trucks that can video people inside cars? I heard a story about that and the kind of stuff that ends up on those video's. I found it hard to believe so I figured I would ask the professionals if it myth or truth.

Pretty much myth. Some companies have put cams in their trucks, but it is to record in the event of an accident, not for recording people in other vehicles.

You asking if they video inside the truck it's installed in? Or to look in other peoples cars?
I have seen where cab companies have installed the cameras to video the driver/backseat and also out the window. You can see some great accident footage of a driver falling asleep and being tossed around inside the car as it flips. As far as trucking companies using it to spy on their drivers, I haven't heard of it yet, but you never know....

Ive installed a camera inside my truck, not to spy on 4 wheelers, but to show my family the roads, tornados, white-outs....anything of interest.

Thanks for the responses. You know how guys talk and tell stories about what truckers see on the road so I just decided to ask the real professionals and see what they said. The latest story I heard was that the camera's installed by trucking firms were catching all kinds of nudity and stuff like that and the drivers would see who had the best video.

NAH, The WA State Police carry them and ride w/truckers to catch 4 wheelers driving like Bats-outta-hell. It's working quite well I hear.

My company has installed cameras in the cab that look at the driver and straight ahead. This is what the company news letter said. The cameras will activate when there is a sudden stop or hard braking takes place. They are not there to look at the public except to video someone that cuts in front of the truck and the driver has to take action.

At the end of the shift the terminal supervisor will download the information (if there is some) and look it over and then call the driver in to discuss what happened. I thought the drivers would be upset with this type of monitoring but so far I haven't heard any negitive responses from the drivers. This is in the Los Angeles area so you know there are times when accidents happen and it's not the fault of the driver. The numbers show that the cameras are working so the company will never pull them out. I know first hand how this type of procedure works. Once they have good numbers they will spend tons of money to make sure they have the best system money can buy.

I also know for many years scams have been tired for lawsuits and most of them involved rear end collisions. They would run two or three cars and then jump in front of the truck and cause the truck to rear end them. Then they would claim their back or neck will never be the same. Of course this happens when the traffic is heavy and moving at a slow rate.

If we have them you can bet other oil companies or gas haulers will have them too. They all get together once a year and talk about what's working for them.

I don't have a camera in the trucks that I drive. I do however have a black box of sorts. This black box records where I am with gps, throttle positions, speed, horsepower, torque, engine temps, fault lamps if there are any, and anything else that the comapny wants. I know that they are recording eveything and it does not bother me because I don't drive like an idiot. I do the speed limit, I mind the corners, and other traffic.

if u search the web you'll find a company who sells a 4 camera setup to record all round the truck for accident records etc...... theres no need for any company to record inside someone elses vehicle. Mind you there might be drivers who hold handheld cameras that they'd use to watch for "seatcovers"
