My 2006 isx recently spun the #2 bearing 30k into an inframe, As the oil pump seemingly failed. More on my part as I never thought to have it changed either. So With that said I'm looking for another truck to purchase. I came a cross a few glider kits, One with an n-14 500k miles and the others with a 12.7 detroit with 755k miles. Which would be your go to without a doubt?
I've heard of/Recently researched the n-14 that the engine block can start fretting. how common is that? and is it avoidable? Just reading about that has me looking else where but I used to think so highly of that engine.
N-14 Vs 12.7 Glider kit which engine would you buy?

The N-14 would be my pick.
Bean Jr., jsnell and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Any experience with the motor? How did it treat you if so

Both are great engines.
I have heard of fretting before with the n14 if you run it at low RPMs I think? I'm not sure about that year but some of them had injector harness problems or electrical problems there with the injectors.
With that being said someone on this forum said they have one and I don't remember if it was rebuilt or not but it had almost 2 million miles on it.
I have the mechanical sibling to the n14, the Big cam Cummins, and I love it. The n-14 is even beefier.
The Detroit has a super heavy duty bottom end. The weak point is the bull gear which at 755000 miles needs to be done.
I bought my truck with a blown 12.7 because the bull gear stripped at 800,000 miles.
But both are great engines.Last edited: Oct 11, 2020

Good to hear. Either way it seems i'd be in good hands. I have read that the fretting is more common with the 500 to 525 hp engines. The one i am looking at is a 460hp. That might be my way to go. We will see. -
Well I have a friend that is a actual Cummins mechanic and he thinks the n14 is 100% if that helps.
But really they both are excellent engines.410Truckin Thanks this. -
I would be inclined to choose the lower mileage engine.

Don't lug it, drive it like a big cam and the block is fine.410Truckin, Roberts450 and spsauerland Thank this. -
I'd pick the truck that's in better condition and/or spec'd best for the task I need it to do. Engine would only be a small factor in the choice.
Bean Jr. and 410Truckin Thank this.
