N14 Celect Plus Misfire and Gray Smoke

    Hey all,
    I've finally had enough time to get my KW up and running. So far the issue I've had is at startup there's a ton of white smoke and an audible popping in the exhaust. The white smoke does not go away when hot and neither does the popping/miss. When I was driving it, any bad shifts made the stop engine light come on and promptly made it shut down. Tomorrow, I'm planning on checking and setting the top end tomorrow, and possibly getting in an injector harness. If the valve set doesn't get it I'm planning on disconnecting each injector to find the bad hole. As far as I can tell, there's no blowby out of the dipstick and other than the miss it doesn't feel down on power. Any other recommendations on things that could be wrong.

    Check for a bad injector or pass through before spending your money on a overhead.

    I would be ready to dig deep. That pop and miss accompanied by grey smoke says camshaft and followers

    I had the same issue with a with a last gen 855 (sometimes called an N-14 Mechanical) originally I found #5 cam lobe wiped off, once I fixed that the fun really started. It still smoked, coughed, intermittently missed on all cylinders at an idle. After lots of time, money, alcohol, and self loathing, I started a thread on here I think it was called “Smoking Cummins 855”. After trying everything suggested I found a plastic injector cross over with the end blow out.
    I’m not sure how much will cross to your electronic motor, but what does could be beneficial.

    Are there any ways to diagnose between the cam and fueling issues?
    I forgot to mention that the misfire and popping dissapeared with RPM and the truck gets much smoother at high idle. I think that's why I was leaning towards a fueling issue.

    A bad camshaft will cause a miss, but you will also notice a loss in power.

    A bad injector will give you a miss, but the power will stay about the same.

    About five ago I had a miss on my 2001 N14 Celect+ that caused the engine to shake at idle but would it gradually disappear as the rpms rose, but there was loss in power.

    My mechanic said it may be a flat lobe on the camshaft, but I didn't think that was the problem.

    It wound up to be a bad injector.

    I would check the codes that is causing the stop engine light and go from there. Could be just a bad cam sensor or some other electrical issue.

    That's good news for me, it seems to have a bit more power than my other truck, but the other one is a 435hp and the KW looks like it was up-rated to 525 in the build sheet I got from the dealer. It definitely smooths out with RPM and is better by a large margin just at high idle.
    I'll give that a try and see if I can get it to do it around the lot. Anyone know if the KW will only show body codes on the dash or will it also show engine codes?

    Quick update, discovered that cylinder number 3 had excessive lash, but then found out that I forgot the 12 point 11mm socket I need to pull the Jake's off. I couldn't get down to the injector to feel check it though. More later.

    Just disconnect wires from outside of rocket boxes that go to injectors listen for change in the motors sound pretty good indication of which cylinder is issue
