Ive noticed that the truck with an N14 cranks and cranks before it finally starts. Ive been around some 505 cummins engines that crank forever since new. Is it just something about cummins or is something going wrong? Our trucks with volvo engines fire right up as well as our cat. I was told to check voltage to the fuel solenoid when cranking but it has good power to it. thanks

Sometimes drivers rush the ECM. You have to wait till all the gauges come back down and the motor finishes it's self diagnostic before it will start. Usually takes 3-5 seconds, longer in the cold.
If it's an old engine with miles on it, could just be a little worn and harder to start. -
Fuel pumps prolly worn out. seen 2 n14's with that problem an it was the pump both times. its around $800

Agreed with fuel pump. Your probably losing the prime and are trying to lift the fuel with the injector pump (good way to kill the injector pump).
Otherwise try using the hand primer before starting. -
my cummins couldnt tolerate those cheap truckstop fuel filter.try putting a baldwin on.my started everytime.those white ones made it crank and crank

If it's not fuel or fuel pump / injector related some of the Celects like CPL 1807 have this & just re-calibrating the ECM improves the hard starting.

The N14 has a check valve on the side of the motor before the line drops down to the filter. Take the valve apart as you probably have a piece of crap in it such as possibly a piece of aluminum that got sucked up from the tank.

N14 requires 22 PSI before it will fire.
That's why it keeps cranking until the pressure at the injectors reaches 22 PSI.
Does your truck have an in cab fuel pressure guage? If so, check the line going into it and make sure that it.s tight.
Usually, it's the check valve. I think it's about $9.00 for a new one. -
Its a 2001 with 1,060,000 miles on it but everything has tested good and theres not a leak on it. Doesnt burn enough oil between changes to notice either. I changed the fuel filter on it last year if i remember right with a white one, but it didnt help it any. It went to hitting on 5 cylinders a few years ago and took it to the shop and it had a piece of an injector in the pan so the guy said. It was hard to start before that though.

I had a n14 with same issue, turned out starter was getting weak and not turning over as fast taking longer to build pressure. I guess over time I didn't realize it was getting that slow until I changed it. But check the other stuff that has been said, that was where I started but ended up being starter in my case

It could be all of the above. Your truck is getting up there in mileage and age. It is kinda unrealistic to have a truck like that "fire right up". If it is taking a an extra couple of seconds to start you could be throwing a lot of money at it for nothing. I would just live with it for now.
