We are completely baffled with the heat issue with our N14. Hot days or pulling a grade it will run a temp of 200. We have new thermostats and a new heater control valve in the truck. We cannot figure out why she is running so hot. Also, the truck has a problem holding heat in the winter. Had to use the winter front when other trucks weren't using theirs.
Hubby is wondering if, when the valves went and the diesel was mixed into the coolant, if it possibly ruined the radiator.
Anyone have any ideas???

200 is normal from my n14 in the summer time on a hard pull it will cycle 200-210 always has. In the northern winter it will run about 180. I was told these numbers were normal.

Called an old Shop foreman buddie of mine. He told me to have you Check 3 things one the Intercooler to see if it is Plugged up remember it is in FRONT of your radiator and if it is plugged up you are not going to get airflow thru the Radiator. He also said Check the Water Pump for a possible loose Impeller on the Shaft and it is partilly spinning on the shaft not moving all the water. Do not laugh I have seen this Personally when I pulled Wrenches at Roberson. Third he said check for Sludge in the bottom of the Radiator. BTW this man is a MASTER Cummins Mechanic and was the one that my boss brought in to Overhaul the 444 to 720+ HP I think he would know WTF he is talking about.

I was told that 200-210 was normal for n14 thermostats open at 210 I believe is what they told me. What temp do u think it should be running? If it runs cold all the time milage will suffer. My radiator is a year old and the truck has ran these temps since I owned it "2005" and passes oil analisis every service. It is a n14e plus 435hp. It will cut itself off and will give u a warning I believe at 225. I am thinking I may be wrong but the fan dont come on till 200.bullhaulerswife Thanks this. -

I would expect him to know what hes taliking about if he inframed it. Mine is a 1999 I dont think that would make a diffrence is the fan running all the time? Is a light coming on? I would start by calling cummins and see what they say. Tom Evans at TH evans in Athens GA told me that mine was normal at those temps it realy would depend on the thermostats and the temp the fan was coming on. What temp did it run before the rebuild? Tom is a very reputable engine builder dealer and so on. If you talk to cummins let me know what they say.

I'll have to ask about the temps before the rebuild, not sure. This guy that did the in frame is supposed to be an expert too, but..... you know your gut instinct that kicks in sometimes.... yeah, thats what hubby is running on here. LOL
The fan kicks on at 190, always. No lights though, that I know of. When I talk to him, I'll check to make sure. And I believe that our guy told him not to let it run over 200 for very long. Doesn't make sense, does it? -
Most engines will run at above 180 on a hard pull on a hot day, the not running up to temp in the winter has me wondering if the thermostats are closing enough. Some aren't right when new.
Backing out of it at temps above 190 will be easier on the engine but I wouldn't think it necessary.
Radiators get replaced lots, if the bottom tube is very hot, the radiator isn't cooling enough, the air to air and, or, the condenser may be plugged, but the core may be corroded if everything is clean.
Fan on is at 200, usually, may be less, is this a 500 or 525?
Did the valve get fuel in the coolant since the in frame?Last edited: May 19, 2009
