Hey folks, got a weird issue.
So my dash gauge shows all normal temps but my High Water Temp dash light and alarm are going off.
Plugged in cummins insite, code 144 Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit
Recommended replacing the coolant sensor, replacing the pigtail and checking the wiring, I did all three of those things.
So before the high water temp light wouldnt go on until the dash gauge hit about 180 degrees.
Now, after doing the recommended repairs, when I turn on the ignition the light and alarm are going off immediately as the engine is cold.
I was so certain it was the wires because if you wiggled the wires near the pigtail, you could hear the engine noise change like it was changing parameters for a sudden temperature change, and now I'm just ####ing stumped.
Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions?

Change the entire harness. Easier than going through looking for breaks, plus you'll get all new coonectors, boots and pass thrus.
kogaFX and Oldironfan Thank this. -
Please provide information for what chassis you are working on. While the coolant temperature sender may be connected to the ecm and be read by Cummins ecm. It is possible there is a separate high coolant temp warning altogether that may be malfunctioning depending on the OEM.
Have you verified the temp to be accurate in the ecm and to match the dash? Has the fault returned since new sender and the wiring fixed? If not, I would be looking for a separate high water temp switch and wiring.Last edited: Jul 20, 2018

An update:
I guess theres 3 coolant sensors, and the one that goes to the idiot light inside the cab either has a faulty sensor or faulty wiring. I unplugged it. The ECM and dash are both reading proper temperatures still after unplugging the single wire sensor that goes to the idiot light. I'm going to check that particular harness and replace that sensor on my next day off but truck is running good now with no light or alarm.
To Goodysnap:
It's a 99 Kenworth T600 but this is not the original engine it came with. I don't know what this motor came out of. But the sensors and wiring are definitely different from the diagram I looked at showing how it is from the factory. -
Paccar used a normally open switch. When hot the switch would close and ground the wire to turn the light on. If you are not using a high water switch on the new engine the wiring could be rubbing and grounding out somewhere intermittently causing the light to come on. Identify the circuit and disconnect it, or order the factory switch, install it and hook it up so it functions correctly.

How did you ever solve this issue? I’m currently having it and the alarm sound is driving me nuts. I’ve replaced both temp sensors and even the gauge.
