I thank there is an aluminum plate on the left side of that pick up tube where you can see the bolts. While you are here get those apart and replace that seal.

Thanks to all for the tips and comments. I tried to make a little reference video for the next guy who encounters it. I’m letting the RTV gasket maker sit until tomorrow, then I’ll fill back up with oil and check for leaks.

    Heavyd and ShooterK2 Thank this.

Ok, so now with the pan being so clean, I added 7.5 gallons rotella and a gallon of gear oil but the dipstick is so clear it’s real tricky to read it. I researched the oil capacity, and looks to be a 10-11 gallon capacity. But a YouTube video showed putting in 8 gallons.

I don’t want to overfill but don’t want to underfill either. The dipstick reading is clear and seems wet up past the full mark after many readings. I was told that 8.5 would be plenty to go run it for a day and let the oil get darker, then check from there. Any suggestions? I Powered the motor on for about 15 minutes, to see if it would be a little darker but the pan is clean as a whistle!

I thank those normally took 42 quarts, 10 and a half gallons. Log onto Cummins insite, fill in the engine info and you should be able to find it.
Do you know if your dipstick is correct? If it is way overfull the crank can whip the oil into foam and your oil pressure can drop after about 30 miles. That takes about 3 gallons extra.

Yea I always herd overfilling can spin bearings too. I believe the stick is reading true. Always has. I looked at it too when I had the pan down.

Once I grime the oil up a little I know I should be able to see it. Just didn’t want to run it to low on oil either

The bearing problem is caused by the oil foaming, a side effect of over filling. That engine should hold 10.5 gallons including the filter but double check thart on cummins website.

Ten4. I forgot about the oil filter. I filled it up to the top almost. That should be about a half gallon there too. So I got about 9 gallons with one gallon being a thicker oil like Lucas.

1C2D3910-3EF6-467D-A96C-C3C2D4C3967C.png I’m so used to using parts and service literature on there, I forgot they got the simple things like oil capacity. It looks 9 gallons is right about on the money (low side). At least for now until it gets darker so I can add the rest.

    Appreciate it.

It says 42 quarts. That's 10.5 gallons. Id add some to make it exactly 10.5 gallons and scribe a new mark on the dipstick.
