I am all for fair trade, competition, synergy, etc, but I just do not see how this is an equitable arrangement.
All I have heard from US Drivers who have been into Mexico is how it is commonplace for them to have to bribe their way past officials. I don't know what kind of truckstops they have down there, but I would guess limited and of poor quality.
So my question is, how is this good? It seems more like one-way trade, than free trade. US Drivers are not going to want to risk getting their rigs impounded because they were not able to, or refused to bribe an official. Now it would be easy to say I am stereotyping, but I have heard this from 95% of the drivers who have actually trucked into Mexico.
I guess basically what I am asking is to the people who support this, what are your reasons? How will this benefit you? I keep hearing arguments about free trade and the natural law of economics, but it sure doesn't seem fair. If we cannot safely truck into Mexico, then how do we benefit as well?
Ross Perot doesn't seem so nutty to me anymore. I think I can actually hear that giant sucking sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkZnnotyoKY
It just seems like the Nafta superhighway is a giant one-way street.
