I currently run under a DBA. I just started my LLC. Can I still run legal with my truck registered in my personal name? I do not lease. Run under my own authority which is now obviously under my LLC with my DOT number. Thanks

I think, just to CYA, make simple lease agreement that You( (DBA) lease truck to You (LLC).
Call OOIDA, they will probably tell You if You need that or not.

You'll need to lease the truck to your LLC and notify the state that the truck is now leased to them. Otherwise they can cancel the plate for lack of insurance. You can change the name when it comes time for IRP renewal or leave it that way, which may save you paying sales tax again if your state charges it on trucks

It should be the same for a commercial tag.

What state doesn't use the vin? There are often companies with the same name in the same state. Going by mames not vins could get messy.

When it comes to canceling registrations due to lack of insurance, it's very easy to have it happen. How does the state know that your still the owner of the truck when it's insured by some other entity. In my experience, it's much easier and less costly to be proactive in atypical situations when dealing with the state. When it comes to IRP, it is REQUIRED to notify the state upon change of authority and to give them the new insurance and lease.

In my experience DMV doesn't care who owns the vehicle and who insures it as long as its registered and insured.
I've mixed and matched so many times and never had an issue.

And I dont believe he's changing carriers. Just registering his truck for the first time.

    Derailed Thanks this.
