I toured the wix plant years ago and at that time they were making both wix and Cat filters. Towards the end of the Cat assembly line there was a worker cutting off the string used to hold the filter paper together until the glue had set up. On the Wix line, they simply were slapping the filter ( string still attached) into the metal cannister. Think about this.... the Wix now has a string being exposed to 46-60 psi of hot oil pushing and rubbing that string against the filtering media until it finnally rubs a hole thru the paper allowing unfiltered oil and debris to flow to the clean side of the filter and on to your bearings.
You'll never know when that happens and, if you run extended drains you will experience shorter engine life as a result. So, in the long run, what have you saved?

Check out a Cat 256-8753,175-2949, and maybe a few others..how many time have you looked into the f/w separator and you can actuall see the metal spiral tube and the pleated filter media? On the newer 256-9753 and 175-2949 they actually have a built in "stand pipe" that runs about 3/4 way down the filter. It's supposed to increase the engines efficiency by increasing the fuel density to the injectors by reducing air migration. I've had quite a few customers that have run it one time and have noticed a difference in performance. Ever since then they come back every time for the filter with the "pipe in it".

Ya knoe people think I am crazy for changing my oil at 10,000. this is why I like to change it often. you never know when you may have an inferior filters on your truck, like when you have your truck serviced.

Ya, I tend to go alittle overbored on filter and oil intervals. Granted I only have one truck, not a fleet, but to me an extra $10 for a filter a few times a year is worth it.

Have you got any links to the 256 9753 separator ? is it the same flow as the 256 8753 ? mounts to the same head ? I'd like to know more about that .

I used CAT filters on my first change after buying the truck. Switched to Donaldson on the 2nd, not sure of the micron differences, but the CAT's definitely seem heavier.
