cart before the horse, but with no real OTR experience, got my
CDL with all endorsements back in June 2013, still received an
invite from two of those tanker companies on those lists. Apply anyway
just like they are suggesting. -
Really? TMC was at my school on Tuesday and told us it was $500 for the 7 weeks of training and then .40/mile or 26%

Like a few have said, it doesnt really matter..I say do what i did and do it all...I would say running vans didnt do anything exciting for me..tank and flat, yes, totally..
Learn how to do it all, focus on keeping your record clean..with this technology goin around, thats the biggest threat to us and our futures..Being e-hammered, or e-fornicated..(like that better)
Dont be a butthole..Being a good dood and a quality hand goes along way..X co-workers and bosses have led me to the higher paying gigs..
These first year(s) are just your foundation..you can get your foundation anywhere..so pick your company for some quick little reason, such as, hot secretary, pretty trucks, maybe even a decent appearing manager or something..
As a done-it-all operator, I must say, my flatbed experience got me a 4500 dollar a week job with haliburton in the north dakota oilfield last year..only stayed 3 months, was a homesick ####, but i might actually move back there for a decade or so as I have lived stupidly for all of my early years and have no retirement money (at 47)..need to play catch up, can do there..I can run thier tankers, thier flats, the sides, the bellys, the enders, the heavy tow rigs, the winch trucks, most of what they got..Now hauling oversized heavy equipment for Empire machinery for 28 an hour
If i could have been me, much earlier in life, id have my own fleet now, lol!!!
Point being, learn it all man...dont stay with running dry freight in vans for more than 2 years tho..Its not nessesary!!..If ya got a ##### for vans, then give ltl couple years, Abf Saia Yrc etc etc...you can have your own bed and toilet everynight there
You just dont want to look like a job jumper, so I go with at least 2 years..Sometimes the too much exp has hurt me tho..Saia for example didnt want me because i had too much tanker and flat years, too many years with lowboy and excavator and backhoe..They picked a dood who came out of school and had 1 year otr with some random well known name carrier!! This dood asked everyone on day one if he should placard his tractor also..my buddies there told him 'yes'...so he had placards on the front grill, the back window, and on the doors!!! what the hay!!!
So my path was far from perfect, but it has many benefits as it gives you freedom of choosing and not being stuck
Sorry i rambled, bored, a tad tipsy day off lol!!!NavigatorWife and GWIZ2260 Thank this. -
I'm in need of advice also. I recently got laid off from my job at a oil well service company and I've only had my class "a" for three months. Schneider has offered me a regional set run delivering flexsteel furniture supposed to be Monday thru Friday only. I would get a new automatic truck and trailer for this newly acquired account. The set pay is $950 a week. Butler offered regional 600 miles from Kansas City which is close to home. Said I'd be home every other or every third day. 36 cents a mile minimum of 2800 miles. Needing advice on which one is better.
jfkreload3d Thanks this. -
I do not know what the website says. I do know about the passenger rule. After 90 days solo you can have a passenger. Unless you have accidents or something which safety would have to approve then I believe. No pets allowed.

I bet Schneider's a great company to drive for around Halloween.

For the love of God do not go with Schneider. They may have once been a good company. I read that before I came here. They changed systems, lost customers, the drivers spend more time sitting than they do driving. Over 10% of their bulk fleet has quit in the past 3 weeks. If you enjoy not driving and bringing home less than $300 a week then this is the place for you. If you want to drive and make money go somewhere, hell anywhere else. There are about 10 of us about to move to McElroy. I've been sitting since Friday at noon. Their system was shut down all weekend and I'm still sitting at 12:30 on Monday.
