I am out just finishing my first week with my mentor and I'm having a really hard time with in city turns. I can't seem to figure out how I need to approach each turn and how much to compensate for the tandems to clear properly. This is really driving me nuts and I don't feel like I'm learning or getting better each day, so I need some advice if anyone has any. Thanks

You can play it safe and just use as much space as possible on every turn. If your tandems are near the front you can make sharp turns, but if they are further towards the back your turns are much wider. As you are turning, look in your mirror to see the path your trailer tire is going to take.

I've been pretty much doing that, but I'm getting yelled at by my mentor for borrowing space I don't need to borrow in other lanes. My mentor has taught me A LOT in one week, but honestly I think I would drive 100x better if I didn't have someone sitting next to me yelling at me and telling me step by step how when and where to turn. I'm not a big fan of the mentor process. It makes sense and is necessary, but these people aren't teachers, they're truck drivers with short fuses. Not the best combo for learning.

Just tell him that since you are new you feel comfortable playing it safe. It is better to take a turn too wide than to hit something. In time you can take the turn blindfolded. If he yells just say OK and keep doing it.

Until u learn the whole process take as much room as u can... I think it's always better to swing wide and have your trailer a few feet from the curb than be the one who has to backup traffic behind u so u can back up to try again. Trust me after u get comfortable you will be able to put the trailer inches from the curb without thinking twice and wonder y you even made this thread lol

I hope you guys are right that it just becomes automatic, because right now I feel like this stuff just isn't clicking. This kind of thing seems so easy to some students and it drives me nuts that I still can't look at a turn and at least have an idea of what to do other than just take as much room as possible. I feel like I'm not learning how to turn doing that every time.

learning to drive a truck isn't rocket science that's learned over night.
your trainer can yell at you all he wants. but in reality. WE ALL BORROW SPACE. like mentioned above. better to block the people so you have room to breathe. then to get trapped blocking traffic. cuz they'll give you the finger. specially in rush hour traffic.
when i'm in my car. i want trucks to get out of my way. i don't care how much space he needs. just make the turn. and be done.
your going to make turns on TONS of streets that you'll wish you were never on. they aren't wide enough for a car, let alone a truck.
my trainer wouldn't like my turns but i'm 13 years into this profession and i don't really care. if she were in the passenger seat. i'd just giver her the finger. but i dn't take up space just becuase. the rules i learned are still in my head. but i'll do what it takes. and sometimes there just ISN'T ANY room for rules.Big Duker Thanks this. -
hello mr.jowsuf, do not give up, you have come this far, you will make it.have a bless day.

I always use as much space as is possible, i hate dragging over curbs. You really dont need to brush them by a fraction of an inch.
Your "mentor" sounds like a douche that can never be wrong.HotH2o Thanks this. -
someone yelling isnt being a mentor at all,and the best method i use is a "button hook".your are "arching the length around a corner and as you move foward the "piviot point" moves foward also. research this online if you dont know what im refering to,please. its far better to endure him yelling than u hitting something, cause that ll stay on your record for years.
