I-77 corridor is notorious for this issue. Parking along I-40 isn't exactly to write home about either. Whenever I pass thru that state I plan on shutting down in either Virginia,South Carolina or Tennessee depending on where I'm going.

The PA tnpk is a perfect example of what's needed and the least costly solution. Pull offs every ten miles or so just park behind the line. Most trucks are self sustaining with fridges and microwaves. Showers and food are nice but that can be had during the day at every other exit. Available parking at 1am is what's needed.

I haven't seen the PA turnpike in years. How much trash and how many piss bottles do you see at these pulloffs?

Actually I don't notice much trash at all come to think of it but then again it's a toll road so trash and maintenance is kept up. This also illustrates the problem with my solution that I didn't factor in. It's a toll road.

And Wyoming is another model that works. About every 150 miles there is a large, open area, well off of the interstate. It's designed for winter closures but the concept works fine for truck DOT break parking demands. I personally don't like to break anywhere within about 300 feet of a fog line of a high-speed interstate.

Every bit of space that is made available and accessible [and legal] is that much more help for the industry. A few large areas and many small areas, it's all desperately needed, everywhere. Whatever is possible needs to be done ASAP

NC is also the state where they have the one set of exits on 77 that they don't allow anyone to park on because the winegrower in the area didn't like the looks of the trucks. The oasis's in OH and PA are a nice setup for truckers, even they fillup with very little room in the evening hours a lot of times. They need easy off/ easy on areas, bathrooms would be great. Hate to say it, but why not expand scale areas for more parking. There are more problems now with trucks taking their 30 min break on the fuel island than there was 10yrs ago, it is terrible now, just wait. The detective you have to be in order to find that little hidey-hole no one knows about.

Heard about that one. Apparently the winegrower happened to be a good friend of former governor Pat McCrory, who signed the enforcement action along I-77 into law. The Highway Patrol sent a "special notice" to trucking companies that parking along I-77 was off-limits (when I worked at Western Express they had it posted at the Emporia,Virginia terminal).

    Erm... sorta.

Midway was where I went. Sbarro pizza 10 a slice thank you very much, always a spot near the base of the hill. (Not exactly smart in the heavy rains... what with land slides and all...)

    Breezewood was another.

There was a spot or two in the Bedford Altoona area you could hop off the pike, cash out pay the toll, climb a hill. Sleep a while, come down reenter pike and keep going. Good times.
