Lets face it there's no perfect way to get from Omaha to LA ...pick your poison and what works for you .
I'm old and lazy and not interested in throwing chains .
Growing up in north Dakota I'm familiar what a lot of wind and a little snow does .
After Sept ill be running the southern route thru kans. ..But no guarantees there either .

    Hammer166 and Lepton1 Thank this.

    There's weather rolling in.

Up to a foot in the mountains. Colorado could get more.

It's supposed to be windy in Wyoming and in the Texas Panhandle region over the next few days which prevents an easy bypass using US-54 and I-40. Maybe drive to Nebraska then check road conditions before deciding to stay on I-80 or take I-76 down to I-70. You might just have to end up sitting a little until it's safe to proceed on either route.

When weather permits, yes. At least in my book. It's shorter and can be turned in the same time @80k, so it's quicker with lighter load. Less wind, and less idiocy. Although the latter has been changing rapidly the last couple years, way too many inexperienced guys up in the high country now.
