    Hello all,
I am planning on taking a road trip with the family from Phoenix to Chicago and back this summer. Since I am more of a local/short regional driver I want to ask the experienced OTR guys about an interesting scenic route, preferably off the beaten path. I am looking to show my kids some interesting places, meet some good people and eat some great food. I have about 4 days each way so time isnt much of an issue.

    Thank you for your help

There's a good kid's museum in St. Louis, and the arch, and a good zoo, and Six Flags amusement park.

Take I-17 north to Flagstaff, you will be near the Grand Canyon,,from there take US89 north to US 160 East follow thru AZ thru Cortez, CO continue across Colorado on US 160 to Walsenburg,CO,,from there take CO hwy 10 Lamar,Co from there take US 50 east to Garden City,KS ,At Garden City take hwy 400 east to Dodge city,KS all the way to Wichita,KS keep following hwy 400/54 to Joplin,MO.
From Joplin go north on I-44 to Springfield,MO,,at Springfield ,MO take US 60 all the way across Missouri into Illinois then take I-57 (north to Chicago

Or you can take US 60 east from Phoenix and work your way thru Roswell,NM from there to Lubock,Tx and from there ?
Going thru Flagstaff and then thru Cortez,CO route will be more rual and interesting, If on 2 lanes watch out for trucks and locals,,

cortez is kind of a long way out of route. but roswell would be interesting. one of the famous outlaws is buried there.

been awhile since i been through but i want to say billy the kid. i've been wanting to stop in, but i heard it's not truck friendly parking.

Us 60 up to globe Az, over to St johns Az, up to black rock NM, to gallup NM, even see the ice volcano.

Up to shiprock NM, on the old 666 highway, now 491. continue up to cortez CO, then across the southern colorado rockies, Durrango, pagosa springs, alamosa... across to lamar co.

That is the creepiest road I've ever been on. That stretch between shiprock and gallop. Just something about the buzzards lining the fence, packed shoulder to shoulder watching you for over twenty miles. They shouldn't have changed the route number. It really fit the feeling you got driving it.
