    Hi All,

I'm retiring from the Military after 22 years. Over the past 22 years I've driven lots of trucks, even though I am a Maintenance guy.

In 1986 I got my NY State Class 1 license, never did anything with it, I was 20 years old/no experience/etc.

NY State granted me a "Military Extension" on my license, it remains valid for 180 days after I depart the military.

    Now the hard questions:
    1) Will this license be considered valid?
    2) How do I transfer to my current place of residence, Kentucky?
    3) When applying for positions, can I put down my military experience of driving?
    4) How do I pursue this career which didn't work-out earlier in life?

Any and all advice will be appreciated,
    John

as a vet, ALWAYS list relevant experience on applications/resumes. As for #2, have you contacted KY DMV? #4, puruse it! Even though it didn't work twenty years ago that should have no bearing today. Also, gi bill and if eligible, va vocrehab will pay for many cdl schools. Have you been to taps class yet?

You may be able to use that to get your CDL right away with no road tests. Shoot for that because you'll be better off no matter what school you go to. You can also try to get all the endorsements you like. Just be warned the Hazmat endorsement is more costly and you may never neeed it. That's what I would try first.

The old NY class 1 WAS the cdl A of that day, so you shouldn't have a problem there. BUT that's in NY not KY, is there some way you can renew your license in NY and then tranfer to KY? I'd be afraid that if you go stright to KY then the class 1 will get "lost" and then you'd have to start all over. It might be worth the trip up here to the DMV.
As far as it helping get a job , sure it'll help if nothing else you'll save a few $1000 on school:yes2557: but I'm sure that any company worth going with will put you in with a trainer for a while, OTR is another animal compared to military! Thanks for your service and welcome home my brother!

Pm me if I can help with the NY connection
