I purchased a used 2007 Freightliner Columbia with Mercedes Mbe 4000 engine.The dealer sold it saying same as detroit engine.It has over ten thousand dollars in repairs as of yet.It has a blown head gasket now.The mechanics are asking 4800 more .I was hoping to switch engine to detriot S60.Dont want to buy a new one with DPF crap.Has anybody done it before. Please Help .what are goods and bad for doing it.Thank you

Probably be cheaper to fix what you have or sell it and buy a Freightliner that had a factory installed Detroit. You probably don't want to hear this but quit using the half ### cut rate $50 an hour shops and take that truck to a Detroit house. Not a truck dealer. A Detroit diesel shop and pay the $100+ an hour for a proper diagnosis and repair. They will get it right, it will save you money, and best of all they will stand behind the work. I would bet $100 you're getting milked and scammed by some half assed or rip off shop advertising a cheap rate.

Thanks for the concern rollin call .Detroit dealer has a estimate exceeding 7000.I thought maybe getting a detriot s60 around 8000 and do the swap .Sounds like a good idea.Hoping to find someone here who has done this.

Ask in the garage section. It'll cost you more than the trouble it's worth to change out engine makes. I feel your pain. Been there, wrote the checks, and got the t-shirt.

Just thanking coal for trying to save you money. I never did the swap you are talking about but there are always problems. If that cost you three weeks down time what is that worth? Then you may have an electronic nightmare that haunts and costs you. It could be different if it was a side deal but not for your soul source of income.

Its definitely not worth it. Maybe back in the 70's-80's when engines were mechanical it was easy enough to do. Now its a matter of rewiring the whole truck and a number of other things. If you ever have an electrical issue on the new engine it will be a nightmare to diagnose because that truck will be one of a kind and no one will have schematics readily available for it.

Believe it or Not the dealer Lied to you...
That Motor is/was Built in Brazil primarily as a Bus engine. They were fitted to Freightliners & Sterling fro a few years due to some loophole/crack in the emission Laws at that Time.
Subsequently they are Poorly supported by the Dealer network.
If you have any paperwork regarding the (Alledged ) $10k in repairs, take It back to whomever did the Work & see if They're prepared to stand behind their Workmanship ...
Otherwise you really only have 2 choices here.
1) Fix It, then Drive It into the ground & throw It away.
2) throw It away now.

I think that it is his wallet that has been eroded. They put these motors in the Western Star also and they would ge run over by their shadow.
