I have heard it all from the instructors, now I need advice from the real world. Please tell me, only from experience, the five most valuable rules you follow for driving or the driving life that have proven so successfull for you that you will not change them for anyone. This goes for the law, dispatchers, truck stops, anything.
Thanks,

EASY:
1.) my home time. nothing more important
2.) truck stops any question when your backing into the hole G.O.A.L.
get out and look
3.) dont mess with my money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4.) dont ask me to take an illegal load
5.) family emergency: i AM going home!
but other drivers my have different things that can help u better than me. -
#2 Keep a journal of all loads. Load numbers, miles, pick-up and delivery location names and cities. Protect your check/money!!!!
#3 Always check your fluid levels (oil, water, fuel) and belts. Your truck is your home! Even if only temporary, you don't want the heat/AC turned off at any time! A 3 day snow in without fuel, will be getting VERY cold.
#4 Stand your ground with dispatch. But know when to stand down also.
#5 Never PUSH ! Never allow yourself to be pushed by dispatch or another driver. This is prime accident territory.
I think I can speak for most of us, who have spent a lot of time out here. Just saying "Top 5" is misleading. There are 100 things that should always take top priority, and the order they come in depends on your location and situation. You'll spend your entire time out here, re-writing that top 5, every minute of every day.
RUNION's list is a good one too. I place everything he said in my top 5 list...just at differant times -
1. Don't believe anything you haven't researched yourself.
2. Take your time; rushing causes accidents.
3. If it doesn't 'feel right' STOP, and reassess until it does.
4. Trust your instincts.
5. Ask questions of drivers who are doing the same thing; then go back to #1. -
WOW!
Danc694u has very, very first rate advice.
Although I believe his #3 advice should be #2, and his #2 should be #3. -
when in dout backin get ot of the truck drivers will appriciate that and respect you for that .
another thing there is never a stupid question to ask. you will learn someting new every day .good luck with your job and who ever you deside to go with
