Hi, I was wondering if I could get a few peoples advice on my current situation. I have a oil field owner op buddy who has been trying to get me to drive for him for the past 2+yrs. He's by now he has acquired 2 trucks/trailers (fuel hauling). I believe he's on a 90/10 setup with a local broker. He wants to put me (already has another guy) in his truck for 30% of the load. His driver now (for the past 4mo) has been getting approx $3k a week-1099/independent contractor.
My current new job (nights) fuel job is $26.50hr overtime payed on 25. Health ins..401k after 1 year.
My take home is currently $4k-5k at 55-60hrs. ($1k bills/rent..cushy apt.,food) My buddies take home would be around 7k$ish with only food/health ins. (maybe) minor expenses.
My plan is to teach english in a se Asia for a year..but I want juice my savings before I do. Would be living in a truck this winter for 6 months be worth it?
Need advice..go after $ and live in a truck or stay at current fuel job.

Because he's not paying his share of the tax. Makes that 7k ish 5.929 ish. -
So you're really looking at 4000-5000 at current job vs 5900 or so and living in the truck. And that's if the number is actually that good. One bad week for any reason you're back to what you make now. And you're home everyday now and you know what you're doing and what you're making. The money looks to be approximately a wash. Also if you want to stay friends then don't work for him. If it really is that good he should have no problem finding someone.
I'd just keep doing what you're doing.. And go to Asia when you are ready..Toomanybikes, driverdriver, ladr and 2 others Thank this. -
Ok thank you for the feedback ..your right he can have slow months coming up.

I got a little confused when you said his other driver (who is 1099) is making 3k a week yet he's claiming you'll make more than double that. Maybe I just didn't read it properly.
If it's a difference of a grandAI say stay where you are. That grand is made up for in the additional bennies you'll get. Just my opinion. -
Im assuming the op is taking home 4 to 5k a month. If your bud is making 3k a week or 12k a month where is the 5k going to? That seems awfully high if its just for taxes

Not trying to be smart. Just wondering if you're making that kind of money, why would you want to go to SE Asia?
Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
Again, thanks guys. Winter hasn't hit yet, but when it does living in a truck in ND is not where I want to be. I'm a night shift/company man now with 1wk off a year and no light at the end of the tunnel. However, for my travel agenda I'm definitely considering my buddy as a casual option. The problem is he probably doesn't envision having a driver come and go with his operation. To make things simple I'm using a 30% tax on 10k-11k which is like 7k+..but more like $6.5k+ after food and private health insurance etc.
@DougA...SE Asia or other similiar countries (Colombia,Peru) is a single mans paradise hands down. The quality of life is 10x higher than working 60+ hrs driving a truck. I went to the neighboring state (ND) right out of cdl school 6yrs ago and took a 85k tanker job. I haven't really driven anything else and or made much less, unless I wanted to. I don't have a big enough nest egg saved yet, so that's why I'm adamant to just disregard saving for retirement investments and just survive (actually live easy on 1.5k mo. teaching english/degree is required, which I have)
I guess if I was smart, I would acquire a tractor and lease on with his (or another broker) and get into the game..but then how long would I be wrapped up in that?GenericUserName Thanks this. -
Good luck to you. -
Nah man, not North Dakota in the winter.
My friend had his truck gel up on him when he was sleeping there, high idle and additives and everything and it still gelled up. It was like -30. I never want to go there in the winter and I live in MN...
This was back when the oil fields were new. He drove a flat bed and would make deliveries with just coordanates because there is no address.
