Hi guys,
Looking to buy a new used truck to haul a 5 car hauler. I have the option of buying a 2014 Volvo with DD13 455hp and ISHIFT. It looks like a clean truck with 400k miles on it. Large fleet owned and maintained. I don't know much about Volvos so what do you guys think? My other option was a 2010 Freightliner with 600k. for $10k less. The truck will probably only max out at around 65,000 lbs if that. Any info is appreciated.
Need advice on a volvo.

If the Freightliner is dd15/dd16 powered and well maintained I'd go that route . Also does the Freightliner have an epa2010 engine with def or pre without def? The early def engines had the most problems originally
Honestly ,You're going to have problems with either used truck so I'd get the cheaper workhorse personally. -
$10,000 more for a truck with 200,000 less miles...
Buy the Volvo..drive it for 200,000 miles and sell it for $10,000 less than you paid for it..
$0.05 in ownsherip cost, can't beat thattscottme, Car hauler2015, win-some-loose-less and 3 others Thank this. -
Go with the Volvo. The DD15 on the Freightliner is a good engine, but the harness of the new Cascadia's is a nightmare, Cascadia SAM Chassis - the worst thing they ever made, electrical problems all the time....
Volvo D12 is the better engine, but D13 is also good. The weak spot of the D13 are bad injector cups, when you replace them - you are going to have a million mile engine... and very quiet.
Also, the I-Shift is the best transmission on the market. The scary thing about them was, when they brake, Volvo charges $17 000 to replace them..... not anymore. Company out of Chicago rebuild them for $6500 with 2 years warranty....Last edited: Jun 15, 2017

On the Volvo check if the injector cups have been done or if it is on the originals. 6k job at the dealership.

I drove a 2013 Volvo 670 with the D13 in it. Man that truck constantly was in the shop for air leaks and several break downs. 15 time within one year was the number. Here is a list of what was replaced on the motor within that year.
New injector cups twice, clutch, transmission wiring harness, alternator, starter, water pump, coolant holding tank, turbo, and bad air fittings all the time. Most of the replaced parts are just wear and tear items so that is to be expected on a truck that had 350k when I got into it. Once I returned the truck and moved on from the company it had just under 450K. That company ran a fleet of Volvo's and these problems were happening on every truck.
One thing I have heard from several O/O and company owners and drivers is that due to the DEF and all the smog crap on the trucks now the expected life range of any motor is no longer 750k + , but only 400 - 500k before it is going to need repairs constantly and maybe even an inframe. The company I work for now will only use their trucks until 400k then they sell it and get new ones. Just something to think about.
Thank you California !lovesthedrive Thanks this. -

The New Cascadia is even worst. Windshield leaking over cab harness = many electrical problems. Engine running hot = shorter engine life, jake brake not working due to low oil pressure. DD15 won't last more than 500k miles. If you find any good old Detroit ser 60 in a Cascadia body, this is the better deal or just get a glider.
Cascadia glider with Custom harness to fit with the pre emission Detroit ser 60, 12.7 L with Eaton 13 speed stick shift, IT DOES NOT GET BETTER THAN THIS !!! -
Many shops in Chicago, will do it for $3000, faster and better than the dealership. I will go to the STEALERSHIP only if it is a warranty job.
