I saw this RV on craigslist. http://salina.craigslist.org/rvs/3230567192.html

I was thinking I could buy this thing and take out the generator (Onan generator's like this are $3,000+ new) and the AC. and install it on my truck. I've been wanting to get a generator and A/C. It seems like I'd still be able to turn around and sell it without the generator and A/C for $1500-$2000.

Does this seem like a good idea ? I can put it on my stepdeck and drag it home, there isn't much for decent loads out here in west Kansas anyways.

One negative is this is strictly an A/C unit, I'd rather have A/C & heat. But I guess with the generator I can just get a little electric heater for winter.

Your NOT going to fit that motorhome on your step, unless your talking about stripping out there and just bringing the gen/ac home.
One thing your not considering and that the gen will run on gas.

    Nice idea, but keep looking...

There is a guy in Springfield Mo that sells used APU's

Do you think it's too tall ? I know it's not wider or longer than this bus.

you're right it is a gas generator, but good diesel gen's cost $10,000 plus and they claim the gas ones perform better under mixed loads. diesel gen's don't do so well unless you keep a heavy load on them. I would have to come up with a tank though. true enough.

p.s.- I don't care for APU's, overpriced and noisy. I would buy a new Honda gen and Coleman A/C heater before I would ever shell out for an APU

Dan, I think you are misinformed somewhere... First of all, a Gas gen won't last as long as a diesel engine. I have almost 11,000 hrs @ 8 yrs old and has since paid for itself many times over. I have a Proheat unit, now Carrier, but Carrier has made a few improvements that are notable.

What people don't seem to understand is that when these shops give a price, it includes install = $1600 - $2200.
Its not rocket science to hang a unit on the frame and a couple of water lines to the engine.
Since your wanting a rooftop, a excellent choice btw, won't require running vents or hanging a condenser on the back of your truck.
In other words, the basic install could be done yourself and maybe bringing it in to finish up a few things.
There are used APU's out there with less then 5-10K hrs for a good price.
As far as noise, yea there are some that make me want to go shove a potato in their exhaust pipe...
I had a custom exhaust system made ($112) that uses a VW rabbit muffler and runs under my 5th wheel plate and out the rear of the tractor.
Its not very loud at all, just enough to block out outside noise like truck traffic in a truckstop.

Also you could mount the unit behind the sleeper if you don't want to hang it off the side of the frame.
Like I said, a rooftop is a great choice, go Dometic Commercial or Colman Roughneck.
Gas generators won't last that long on a truck... keep in mind that a camper is smoother riding, might be on the road 10K a yr at most... where we do that in a month.

All I'm saying is think long term and keep an open mind.

One source for used diesel generators is the construction light trailers. They have a 6KW generator in them.

Thanks for the tips. I passed on the RV, like Starline said it's something I may have a long time, no point in trying to save money on a 20 year old unit. The coleman roughneck is what I'm leaning towards for heater-A/C. It would be nice to plumb in a diesel generator, but I also think a nice quiet Honda gas unit would serve me well. (It wouldn't hurt my fat behind to walk over and get gasoline once in awhile either !) But I haven't decided on that yet.

One thing that I have to consider is my truck is an '04 with 745,000 miles. At first I was thinking I would be trading it for something else, possibly something with an APU. Now I am leaning towards rebuilding the engine when the time comes and running it for another 4 or 5 years, so that makes shelling out for a generator and heater-A/C a little easier.

There are a couple of us that have researched the differences between the Dometic Commercial & the Coleman Roughneck... Do a search in the O/O forum... its complete with pictures.

    Dometic.. $930 - $1100
13500 btu ac or 15000 btu Ac (trust me when I say you do not want 15000 for the truck)
    34" long x 29" wide
    3 spd fan
    5600 btu heat
same lower unit for AC & heat

    Coleman Roughneck... $1200 +
    43" long x 30" wide
    2 spd fan
    13500 btu Ac
    5600 btu heat
there are 2 lower units to chose from, one is AC only, the other does heat

There is a reason me and the other guy went with the Dometic commercial 13500 btu
