I'm in the shipping container industry, but I don't deal with trucks at all...so I'm hoping to get some advice on purchasing a truck.
Currently looking at options from penske used truck sales (Day Cab Tractors). I am interested in purchasing something to move our 40' and 40' hc containers (empty). We have a landoll 343 that we move those with.
Budget is right around $50k, looking for a 2011+ model. Current options that seem to be available from Penske are Freightliner, International, and Volvo. Average miles seem to be in the 200k-300k range.
Which of those brands is best? Any places I should be checking other than penske?
We are also considering a new pick-up. The Ram 3500 series can move around 30,000lbs...That is also an outside option...

Id stay far away from maxxforce engines in internationals heard nothing but problems with them no experience with them myself tho. Id stick with cummins or detroit engines. Just my opinion. You can search truckpaper. It might also be cheaper to buy a tandem as there are a lot more of them around broadening your search to include tandems will give you a lot more options.

ContainerMan: I would personally look for an older low mileage truck with less emissions. They are rare but exist. Consider what local dealers you have, the best truck can be third if there is not good dealer parts and service. Personally like the M11-ISM, 11.1-12.7, E7 and some newer, C12, manual trans. or Allison automatic. Pay the money and hire a good inspector. A lot of leasing companies will fix most of the items found defective pre purchase at no extra charge and may have a 30 day warranty. They can also see through a pig with silk socks.The less electronics the better and it should last for many years. Everyone else's post are correct and you should be able to do that for 60-70% of your budget.

Do what alot of the oilfield single axle guys have done and take full size truck, get ride of the front drive, move the rear drive forward and cut the end off the frame. this makes your options limitless on what to buy. Any make, any motor, any trans combination you might want. Take a look at the guys that run single axles in california hauling hay wagons. They got it going on!

Any opinions on the freightliner columbia or cascadia models? There are a lot of good deals on prostars...but it seems like its better to put my money towards the freightliners.
2009-2010 models seem to be going for $35k-45k. Are there any major service intervals I should be aware? -

If I wasn't getting a brand new truck with a warranty I would get the 06/07 or older. My 07 doesn't have the DPF stuff though anything newer than 2003/4 has EGR but that is not nearly as much trouble as the DPF is.
Even on the pickup side of things I used to keep my pickups for many years but now with this DPF stuff I buy them new and trade before warranty is up.
And I will echo stay away from the maxforce. I have a 98 international and they are good trucks but it doesn't have that dreaded engine.
