I posted here around a year and a half to two years ago looking for a change. I had been driving bus for a bit at that point, and now have about 3 and a half years of bus driving (CDL-B) experience. Things just aren't working out where I am now, and while I was thinking about going OTR a couple years ago, it's now a done deal. The sooner the better, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just looking at my options. There is a local place - Star Trucking - that offers training, and I'm planning to call them in the morning. There's also Baker College about 45 minutes away, but I can't last 6 more months where I am. I've seen companies that offer paid training... Any recommendations there? I know that many folks say to steer away from those places, but there have to be better ones that others. I know CR England is bottom of the barrel. Other than that, which have good reputations? Thanks in advance!

What is your location and which Star? There are several, and that could help with finding someone with the info.

I just added location to my profile - Traverse City, MI. I'm going to contact them tomorrow. Also want to note I'm very interested in hauling tankers/hazmat. Any companies to recommend?

Link takes you to star training in MI. I thought the same.
Anyways if you neef to get training fast i suggest going ahead and do the sttar or any company that trains yes most say they require you to stay a full year to pay it off but one can get started and then 4 to 6 months start looking into other places.
The starter i began with would have paid all my school but at 4 months i went to better job paid all the school and made almost 10k more than i would have staying at their low pay.
    Good luck

Big thing will be finding drivers that run the area, that know who has the contracts in that area. I know that when I was with Central we went that far north, but it has been years and I only went up there a few times. So not sure what I was hauling out. That was with a reefer.
With Heartland I did not go north of Bay City much. Hauled allot of sugar out of there. But they require experience. So you will be looking at a starter training company.
For training it is up to you. I don't think that going to a private school will help allot with the job search, since most company's that take new starting drivers have their own schools, or contract to schools.
You are in an out of the way area, so finding out who hires in the area will be key.

I hope Star works out. I'd rather do that than "paid training" somewhere. Anyone have experience going a route like Star? Will most "entry level" places hire someone who got their Class A that way, or do they want someone who's gone through the full "Truck Driver" program at a community college? Will they look at my bus experience (some of it charter bus where I had to maintain DOT logs) as a plus?

Training is training when it comes to school. Where does not matter like it use to. The 3 week schools seem to be looked at about the same as the others. This was not the case a long time ago, but seems to be now.
When I went back OTR I had been driving local for quite a few years. Had not been OTR in many years. I was looked at as having 0 experience. At least 0 that they would pay for. They know that what you have makes you better, but they will not admit that or pay for it.
I went to Central for a "refresher" went to a school they contracted with for 9 days, where I spent a great deal of time helping to teach the new guys how to back up. Then out with a trainer on the road, whom I had allot more experience than, for a few weeks.
I put all my safety bonus money towards the payments, and had it paid for in 6 months. I was also on a dedicated fleet by the 6 month mark and got a huge cpm raise for that, and was bringing home 1000 a week.
So you can make money in the large training company's . You just have to be good at planning, routing and communication.

Thanks for the comments tsavory and ChromeDome. Looking forward to chatting with Star tomorrow. If that doesn't work out, I'll be looking for companies that offer training and are hiring out of northern Michigan. Hopefully Star will have some leads in that direction too...

I went ahead and applied online for Stevens Transport. Going to be generating my questions for them this morning during downtime at work, and maybe give them a call mid-day after I talk to Star. At this point, I can't wait to get out of my current job... I just need to make sure I get a good deal and don't let the leaving cloud my judgement.
