First off all I have had my cdl for 19 yrs now drove for the first 6 1/2 . Until I became a single parent after a accident. Anyways now she just graduates school, and I would like to pick up from where I left off at .I have not driven trucks pre since then , but have had a couple occasional drives here and there. Would like to buy my own used truck and start out slowly like just doing a couple trips a week or so. Since my current employer ( not a driving job ) works my 3 days (36 hours) so I have 4 days off. I'm located in upstate NY . I always keep my eyes open on the load boards. Any advise how to get back in?
Need advise becoming o/o

If you are only able to work the truck you plan on buying a few days a week and around your current schedule, it may be difficult to actually make any money doing it. The insurance and truck (trailer?) payments are all the same regardless of how much the truck earns for the month. Also, it may be difficult to find enough good paying freight that also happens to fit your current schedule. If you plan to sign on under someone else's authority, it might work if you got on something dedicated. You would likely take home more if you were able to work a dedicated truck as a company driver for a few days a week.
Just some stuff to think about.O&MTrucking Thanks this. -
Most of the time, your truck needs to be running full time. An exception will be fuel, if you're not running, you're not burning fuel, right ? 4 days availability will limit you. What if you can't find a load until day 2 and you then can't get back in time to be at your regular job. If you could find a dedicated account with the same days outbound etc, or, find a local cartage outfit that needs an occasional extra truck to cover their overflow freight demands, that might work.

Very true if the trucks not moving you are not making. Just trying to feel out there is any body has done itSearainbow Thanks this. -
if you are staying local and only working 4 days a week, buy truck and trailer with cash, keep your overhead as low as possible. Staying local, you can make some money doing so, plenty of freight moving locally, short runs usually pay over $2 a mile, so as long as you have very little expenses, should be able to turn a profit. You won't get rich in this industry though.
My examples are very general based on van/reefer loads. You might be able to get much better rates pulling other trailers.

Some owner-operators working for intermodal/drayage companies do it. Googel intermodal or drayage companies for any near you.

Thanks for the great advise. I had not even thought about that. This morning I started to make some calls and got great responses. Next week I'm off due to vacation time, so I we'll have time to search and buy a truck
I just have to do research on good insurance, was thinking about (getting OOIDA insurance. -
