Guys
Setting up a near omnidirectional antenna pattern is not hard and is doable but there is a lot to it. Having an antenna on the roof of a car does not mean that it will be omnidirectional, there may be some null points.
Volvos are not exclusive to having a good setup.

"Good" is a relative term. I compare all trucks rf performance to my Volvo 770 as a baseline and I'm always disappointed.
The closest I ever came to the Volvo was a plastic bodied Peterbilt 387 with
Co-phased dipoles outside the rear fairings -
I'm pretty well versed @ thinking outside the box in creating the ideal vehicle-specific antenna system from scratch.
Every truck I'm assigned gets a new antenna system designed specifically for that truck and built by yours truly. -
Good for you, invest in some equipment that can actually plot the rf on a truck and you will be surprised at what you find.

That would be Overkill considering I don't do this for a living and most of what I do is simple Structural Engineering for my personal use. Coming up with a solid place to mount my antennas gives me a starting point to measure down from the 13-foot 6 maximum height. From that point on it's just a matter of Designing an antenna to fit within those Limited dimensions with the load in the center and the shaft and whip equal length.
The design of the truck Dictates how I go about finding the easiest mounting location requiring the least amount of fabrication and it's always a compromise in performance vs aesthetics.

But my point is that the truck design is pretty much a static peice, the materials used and the location of the materials are dictating the rf profile of the vehicle more often than not.
Some have a twisted sense of what a ground plane is and how rf travels, a few think that counter poise has to do with a second antenna element while still a few think that any ground is an effective ground. through the work I've wrapped up on the cascadia, there are a few things all are missing that I feel many can not see th obvious because they don't get into real meat of antenna systems. -
