I meet my wife 10 years ago and haven't driven since, at the time she didn't like me being gone. In her defense we didn't live around family so she didn't have much to do when I was out. I ended up taking a non driving job did that for 10 years until the company closed, bad times. It was a good call on the owners part I would have done the same so I don't blame him for wanting to shut the doors.
Anyways I couldn't find any work ended up selling my house and moving closer to my family for some much needed support. Figured I'd find a job and move on with life... well 6 months went by no luck finding a job and employers right now have a stack of resumes to go through. I figured I would try to find a driving job again, I always enjoyed it.
Well I am finding out that because I haven't driven in 10 years and I am not a recent student driver no one wants to touch me. Seems like I have to start from scratch. I ended up finding a job but all I do is move trailers around the yard and pull them in and out of the docks, it is a slow start but hey at least I have an income now.
Anyways I've been plugging my name out there at all the big companies but no luck so far, if any of you could give me some pointers on what I need to do to get back into driving, I would be thankful. Maybe even a few company names I haven't thought of applying to yet.
Thanks

What kind of experience do you have??? (flatbed, dry box, reefer, heavy haul, etc.)
And what type of driving are you interested in???
Now is not a really good time to be trying to get back in though...too many experienced (recently) drivers looking for work. -
Fladbed, Dry van, mainly.
Just a few heavy hauls, but those where mainly for road crews straight shots down the high way and here is your parts have a nice day.
As far as what I am interested in mainly anything, I'd like to get some more OTR time in really but I'd take a local route just as fast.
Yeah I know times are tight for hiring, but since I got laid off and have a chance to hit the reset button I'd like to go back to driving. -
Hate to say it, but with all that time away from driving, and many experienced drivers looking for work, your going to have to do a refresher course all over again. That means going back to school to relearn what you already know..

Well I am starting to figure as much, just really trying to avoid that. Really, I feel like it would just be throwing money at something I already have.

10yrs is a long time...Much has changed, equipment, roads, traffic,DOT regs,...I advise you to go back though a school...Insurance companies dictate who can and cannot be hired...Your lack of current knowledge, makes it diffucult for a company to hire you, even self insured companies have underwriters that help them in the hireing process...Good luck!!!

Thanks for your input, signed up for a refresher course. Talked to a few companies things are looking promising now.
